CHAPTER TEN
Kat kept busy while she waited for Dante but couldn’t get the image of Jimmy out of her head. She found Cindy sitting at her desk sobbing hysterically. It took several minutes before she calmed down enough to answer questions.
“I know this is difficult but I need to understand what happened,” Kat said soothingly. She managed to get Cindy to look her in the eyes so she could try and keep her focused.
“Do you know where Jimmy was going and why?”
Cindy let out a small sob. “He just said he was going to meet a source about a story.”
“That’s unusual. Did he say why he didn’t hand it off to a reporter?”
“I thought it was strange too but I just thought he had a good reason.”
“Is there anything else you can tell me?”
“I noticed he seemed nervous.”
“Did you ask him why?”
“Yes. He just said it was a big story.” Then she started sobbing again.
Kat patted her on the back and thanked her.
Next, she went to interview Paul.
“You said you saw Jimmy leaving around ten. Did he seem to be acting any differently than usual?”
“Well, I said good morning to him and he didn’t acknowledge me. Jimmy is, I mean was, never too busy to take a minute for his employees.” His voice had started quivering and she could tell he was close to tears. Kat felt bad pressing him.
“You said he left around 10. Do you know what the exact time was?”
“9:52. I remember since I had just checked because I had to call about an obit at 10.” He paused for a minute, as something dawned on him and his voice grew even sadder.
“I guess I’ll be writing his obit.”
“Just write it so you can tell your readers what a great man he was. That’s something you can do for Jimmy.”
Paul nodded, and his mouth formed a small smile but his eyes looked sad.
“It’ll be the best obit I’ve ever written. Thanks, Kat.” Then he looked at her as something appeared to dawn on him. “How are you holding up? I know how close you and Jimmy were.”
“Honestly, I feel numb. I’m just trying to concentrate on my story.”
“If you need someone to talk to . . .”
“Thanks, Paul. I appreciate it. If you think of anything let me know.”
Kat interviewed more of the reporters but none of them had anything to add. She returned to her desk and started writing the article, leaving space for the questions she needed to ask Dante.
“You ready?” She looked up to see Dante.
“Yes, I just need to grab my things.” She put her notepad and pens in her bag and then stood up. “I’m ready.” Without a word, they rode the elevator down to the first floor and Kat followed him to where he had parked his Impala.
“I need to ask you some questions for my article.”
“Ask whatever you need to.”
“When Jimmy left the building where was his police protection?” She managed to keep the bitterness out of her voice.
“He was supposed to notify the officer and didn’t.
