Chapter 35
The first thing Roberta did when she stumbled into the bathroom the following morning was to check her face in the mirror. Sheâd gotten home from the bar so late the night before that she hadnât even bothered to wash. Now she was worried she might be getting a zit. She didnât get them very often anymore, but it would be just her luck to develop a big one the day she was going to have dinner with Tom.
Satisfied that no incipient pimple was lurking beneath the surface of her skin, she washed her face and then squeezed some Colgate onto her toothbrush. While she was brushing her teeth, she thought about the phone conversation sheâd had with Tom the night before.
When heâd called, she wasnât sure she even wanted to talk with him, let alone have dinner. The article in the Herald about a serial killer on the loose had freaked her out. What did she really know about Tom when it came down to it? Sheâd only chatted with him a few times in the bar. Whoâs to say Tom wasnât the Chameleon?
But Tom had surprised her by raising the subject first.
âDid you see the article about this serial killer?â heâd asked. âThis is the kind of story that gives us single guys a bad name.â
When Roberta had admitted her concerns, Tom had laughed out loud.
âMy mother would be very upset to think her baby boy was suspected of being a deranged killer,â he said with mock indignation. Before long, Roberta was laughing along with him and feeling foolish that sheâd ever been worried. She hadnât even met him in a coffee shop, she told herself.
âLook,â Tom had said at the end of the conversation, âI understand why you got spooked and why you want to be careful. But weâre having dinner in a public place, and we donât have to do anything else unless youâre comfortable, okay?â
After Tom hung up, Roberta found herself thinking about his words âanything else.â She thought she knew what he meant by those words, and before long âanything elseâ was all that she was thinking about. Her sex drive seemed to have emerged from hibernation during the past few days like a rampaging grizzly bear. Tom had this physical charisma that made her feel hornier than sheâd ever felt beforeâeven hornier than when she and Joel had first gotten involved. Back then sheâd thought that nice girls didnât masturbate. After meeting Tom, sheâd masturbated several times in a week.
Roberta turned to the full-length mirror on the back of the bathroom door and lifted her tee shirt with both hands. The sight of her breastsâlarge, round, and firmâreassured her. Men loved her breasts, she reminded herself, and the sight of them made her feel more confident.
She turned around and slid her boxer shorts down with one hand, peering over her shoulder to see. Sheâd always been less confident about her ass. It was smooth and round, but she often worried it was too big and too jiggly.
