“What happened?” Mylo asked as I lay on my bed, my phone pressed to my ear. I hadn’t talked to him since we found the bracelet at the art gallery and I knew I owed him a call, but for some reason I kept delaying it. Maybe I was ashamed of how out of it I’d been. Or maybe it was that my mother’s story — my story — kept getting more and more convoluted and no less resolved. Thinking about all the layers was getting exhausting.

“Isabel came over and told us her grand theory.”

“Which is?”

“That it’s complicated. That we can’t be sure of anything. That my mom may have been threatened into going with him or something.”

“Really?”

“I don’t know.”

“Okay …”

“I just — can we talk about something else, please? I’m sorry, I can’t think about it anymore. Not tonight. It’s too much.”

He hesitated. “Sure. No problem.”

I rolled onto my stomach. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. My mom and I had another fight, but it’s all right.”

“What was it about?”

“She doesn’t think I should spend my time starting a photography club at school next year. I would be better off using that time to study for exams and get into a prestigious university.”

“Who won?”

“Won what?”

“The fight.”

He hesitated. “I don’t know. Maybe no one. It’s obviously not over.”

I watched my black-hole clock tick past nine thirty. “I think you should do the photography club,” I said. “Don’t let her ideas kill yours. It’s your life.”

“Yeah, maybe. It’s hard when it’s just us. She does a lot for me, actually. I know she really cares, even though it doesn’t seem like it. She just can’t see me. You know?”

I buried my face in my pillow. I knew.

“Are you there?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I said. “I’m here.”
