Chapter 27 - Ciaran

Dublin, 1916

With her jaw set and her feet planted, Chloe met Countess Markievicz’s eye. Ciaran looked at the young American woman and his esteem for her grew. Who was she? She’d appeared out of nowhere and now was laying her life on the line for his country’s independence.

Something about the way she said ‘Yes’, about the way she looked around the room and seemed ready to jump in, made Ciaran’s body buzz. Why had he wasted so much time with his ex-fiancée, who wanted nothing to do with politics and wasn’t loyal to anything or anybody?

Here was a woman that had courage and character, and she wasn’t afraid to fight. The Countess nodded at Chloe and directed her towards a stack of supplies. She handed her over to another woman who was working industriously to pack boxes.

The Countess turned her clear hazel eyes on Ciaran, and took his elbow to lead him out of the room.

“Where in the world did you find her? I was worried she’d gotten lost.” She said, leaning into his ear. “Doesn’t matter. Have you spoken to James?”

“Mm,” Ciaran replied, nodding. “We march tomorrow.”

“That we do,” the Countess replied with a faraway look. She turned her gaze back to Ciaran. “I need your help with something. There’s not many people I can trust, but I knew your mother when she was young, you know. I know I can trust you.”

“You can,” he replied, shifting out of the way as a man shuffled past with a box of bandages. Ciaran watched him duck into the front room, hoping that those bandages wouldn’t be needed. He turned back to the Countess, who slipped a letter out of her skirts.

“Here,” she said, pressing it against his chest. “Take this, and keep it safe. If I’m captured or killed, you’re to deliver it to my mother at Lissadell House in Sligo.” She looked him square in the eye. “Ciaran, you must deliver it in person. It’s not to be opened by anyone but her. Do you understand?”

Ciaran glanced at the envelope, with Countess Markievicz’s neat handwriting on the front. He nodded.

He cleared his throat as she turned away, and she looked back at him. He swallowed. “What if I die, or I’m captured? How do you know this is safer with me than with you?”

The Countess’s face softened, and she looked at Ciaran with almost a smile. She had lines around her eyes, and her face was drawn. She looked tired, but determined. She held herself straight, and looked at him square in the eye.

“You won’t be,” she told him. Ciaran felt a chill pass through his body at her words, and he knew she was telling the truth. How he knew that, and how she was so sure he’d survive, he would never know. A couple days ago, he would have been upset at the feeling. He’d almost wanted to die in the Rising. But now? Now he wasn’t so sure.

The Countess turned and moved toward the back of the house, where Chloe and the others were preparing for battle.
