I stared at the door as her arm fell back to the bed. She lowered her head back to the pillow and sighed.

“Okay. I’ll go check out the room.”

She closed her eyes. I waited for a moment to see if she would keep breathing or not. Once her chest rose and fell with another breath, I got up, took out my gun, and headed to the room across the hall. The door wasn’t locked. I pushed the door open.

A scream bubbled up my throat. On the bed was a female. It was hard to say whether she was young or old. Her body had withered up. Dark gray, almost black skin covered, barely covered, her bones.

“What’s wrong?”

I stepped further into the room so Tony could see the body.

“Oh. That explains the smell,” he said.

I nodded slowly as I inched toward the bed. I hadn’t been expecting to find this in her house. I knew she was hiding something, but not this. I figured Frances was abusing her kids, not living with their dead bodies.

I shook the thought from my mind. We didn’t know if this was her daughter, so it was best not to jump to conclusions. But who else could it have been? The sound of rustling made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Tony turned toward the closet with his gun drawn. He looked back at me, and I nodded. My gun aimed at the closet as he inched closer.

He pulled the door open and dropped his hand immediately. “Hello.”

“Hello,” replied a tiny, meek voice. A little girl sat on the floor in the closet. I craned my neck to see her. Her clothes were dirty; her hair was matted.

“Can you come out of the closet?” He bent down.

She shook her head.

“Why not?”

The little girl pointed to her foot. I gasped, and she looked at me like she hadn’t noticed I was in the room. Around her ankle was a heavy metal chain.

“I see,” said Tony. His voice was calm and measured.

“Get out of my house!” Frances came barreling into the room. “Leave her alone!” She lunged at Tony. He stepped in front of the girl to block her from Frances. I drew my gun again.

“Frances! Stop moving.”

She froze in front of Tony and then slowly spun around. “You get out of my house. Right now!” Her face turned red. Her body practically vibrated with anger. “You get away from my family. My children. You won’t take them from me. I won’t allow it.” She lunged at me.

I aimed at her right leg and fired. She yelped when the bullet hit her, and she collapsed to the ground, moaning in pain.

“You shot me!”

“It was just in the leg. You’ll be fine.” While I kept my gun on her, Tony rolled her over and handcuffed her hands behind her back. The little girl hovered in the closet.

“I’ll call it in.” Tony pulled Frances to her feet. “Whatever is going on here. I don’t really know how to explain it.
