I stared at the door as her arm fell back to the bed. She lowered her head back to the pillow and sighed.
âOkay. Iâll go check out the room.â
She closed her eyes. I waited for a moment to see if she would keep breathing or not. Once her chest rose and fell with another breath, I got up, took out my gun, and headed to the room across the hall. The door wasnât locked. I pushed the door open.
A scream bubbled up my throat. On the bed was a female. It was hard to say whether she was young or old. Her body had withered up. Dark gray, almost black skin covered, barely covered, her bones.
âWhatâs wrong?â
I stepped further into the room so Tony could see the body.
âOh. That explains the smell,â he said.
I nodded slowly as I inched toward the bed. I hadnât been expecting to find this in her house. I knew she was hiding something, but not this. I figured Frances was abusing her kids, not living with their dead bodies.
I shook the thought from my mind. We didnât know if this was her daughter, so it was best not to jump to conclusions. But who else could it have been? The sound of rustling made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Tony turned toward the closet with his gun drawn. He looked back at me, and I nodded. My gun aimed at the closet as he inched closer.
He pulled the door open and dropped his hand immediately. âHello.â
âHello,â replied a tiny, meek voice. A little girl sat on the floor in the closet. I craned my neck to see her. Her clothes were dirty; her hair was matted.
âCan you come out of the closet?â He bent down.
She shook her head.
âWhy not?â
The little girl pointed to her foot. I gasped, and she looked at me like she hadnât noticed I was in the room. Around her ankle was a heavy metal chain.
âI see,â said Tony. His voice was calm and measured.
âGet out of my house!â Frances came barreling into the room. âLeave her alone!â She lunged at Tony. He stepped in front of the girl to block her from Frances. I drew my gun again.
âFrances! Stop moving.â
She froze in front of Tony and then slowly spun around. âYou get out of my house. Right now!â Her face turned red. Her body practically vibrated with anger. âYou get away from my family. My children. You wonât take them from me. I wonât allow it.â She lunged at me.
I aimed at her right leg and fired. She yelped when the bullet hit her, and she collapsed to the ground, moaning in pain.
âYou shot me!â
âIt was just in the leg. Youâll be fine.â While I kept my gun on her, Tony rolled her over and handcuffed her hands behind her back. The little girl hovered in the closet.
âIâll call it in.â Tony pulled Frances to her feet. âWhatever is going on here. I donât really know how to explain it.
