1131 Citadel Time

July 3, 2020

If I expected anything to change with the revelation of a magical creature having escaped within the Citadel, I am sorely mistaken. Class continues as usual.

“I didn’t mean to steal all the color from your blue skies.” Something about the way he says it, the odd phrasing of it, catches my attention, reminding me of the first time he said it, making me regret for a moment that I have exiled him from my life as much as circumstance allows. I turn to him in the classroom chair, wordless, staying that way because I have so very much and so little to say in response.

“Also, you have a very expressive face.” And just like that, it is back to being a mistake to let him closer. The compliment threatens to pull a smile from my face, and the closeness of him is nearly more than I can manage. I maintain my composure, though, searching through my heart to find that place of anger. It is just enough to fit the scowl to my face once again.

“Thanks?”

“Really. When you speak, your eyebrows arch up, and there’s a glimmer to your eyes. It just feels special to hold your attention.” He’s a beautiful man, trying hard for my affection.

I let the gathered breath in my lungs go in a sigh. “Thies. I thought we were past this. I made a mistake, and you took advantage of it. Let it go.” I don’t have any desire to repeat my worst blunder. Today is the first day I’ve let him sit next to me. He’s tried before. Persistence is usually something I can admire, but he is like a mosquito. It is not just the bite but the burning tickle after. In the same way, these interactions are little more than an annoyance with a lingering attraction.

“Like it or not, dearest Emma, we will be spending a lot of time together. I will win you over.” His eyes are too intense, that gorgeous blue stealing my heart, piece by piece. I hate that he can still make me feel this way.

“Cool your tits, Romeo,” Alex places her hand on Thies’ shoulder, brushing curly blond locks from her face. “My man is taking the stage.” Still, her hand lingers, fingers curled around the hard muscle. A moment of unwelcome jealousy flashes through me. Thies turns his broad shoulders, settling into his seat to face the Professor, and still her hand stays.

I roll my eyes as class begins. It comes fifteen minutes after it should have begun. The Professor offers no explanation as usual. His eyes travel along the long rows, twenty seats wide, settling on me for the briefest moment. Alex wiggles in her chair excitedly, thinking the attention is for her. I don’t have the heart to tell her. The Professor is only keeping track of the Legion’s problem child.

The top of his robes lays open today, unbound. A black t-shirt emblazoned with the name Genesis peeks out from underneath. He clears his throat and begins to speak.
