Billy Jay kept his composure. In the past sudden changes in his expectations would throw him into frantic episodes filled with rants and pacing wildly. In this moment though, he was completely lucid and calm. His eyes were the only part of him that seemed capable of movement. He stood statuesque in the middle of the two women while his eyes traced back and forth between them. Not in a maniacal way. He remained silent as he attempted to decide just why he had come. All he really knew was that heâd been driven to see her from the moment he realized sheâd been taken from him. Heâd worried about her ever since heâd seen her fall, ending up lying cold and lifeless on the concrete floor of the visitation room at the prison. He was handcuffed to the desk, so he knew the bulls were aware he'd done nothing physically to cause the accident. He knew however what it was that had caused the episode. It was the question about his involvement with the seven young girls theyâd found, their remains stuffed in those blue barrels out in the cistern on a piece of property where he and his family had lived. Somehow Warden Wilkerson had put together he and Amy Jo were talking about those girls when the incident happened. He erased her from his existence from that night forward. Sheâd been his Shangri-la for sixteen Saturdays and then âpoofâ one night, that Shangri-la was removed from his life forever.
Those nights and days had been hell on earth, but he would not surrender the information Warden Willy demanded from him. He was forced to spend day after day in exile from every other soul and left to suffer in his own dark madness alone. Held in a dark musky cell in the basement solitary confinement. Forgotten. He conspired to create a list of wrongs that would need righted. But tonight, upon seeing Amy Jo again, he now wondered if this silent world heâd been forced to exist in along with being hungâ had somehow stolen a part of him and killed it, leaving only an empty vessel void of the anger heâd been filled and surrounded with his entire existence up until this very second. Why had he killed those girls? What force was trapped inside his soul that caused the callous evil that drove him to do the things heâd done. Could he always hold his father to the fire in blame?
His eyes continued to cut through the emptiness like swords slicing through thin air. His prisoners, for no other definition, sat in silence likely wondering what their outcome would be and when the horror would begin. Only one thought fought within his mind now to spirit him away. That single thought now became Catrina, his wife. What had happened to her in his absence? Could she still love him like she had so long ago when sheâd walked up to that bench overlooking the pier in
