There were more forms to fill out than Ava had realized. It seemed that everything had to be filled out in duplicate and triplicate and then, just to keep her from getting bored, she had to fill them out electronically as well.

That was fine, though. She wanted the vacation and she needed the approval and the pay from her superiors. So, she would fill out all the necessary forms, no matter how many there were.

The prospect of an honest-to-God vacation had really grown on her, and she was getting pretty excited about it. The thought of not having to work seemed like a legitimately good thing for once. She hadn’t ever really been able to sleep late in the mornings since her high school days, and even then, she rarely slept past eight or nine on the occasional Saturday or Sunday morning. In retrospect, it seemed she had been busy all the time with extracurricular activities, leaving very little free time to just be a teenager.

At the time, she hadn’t felt as if she were missing out on anything as a teen. It was only in retrospect, with a few adult years under her belt, that she looked back on her youth and wondered how much she might have missed out on. Certainly, she had stayed busy enough with constructive activities that she hadn’t had time to find and get into trouble like a lot of her peers, but what about other things? Sleeping late, for instance. Or sitting on the couch in her PJs, watching TV all day and just being. Even the simple act of hanging out with friends at the mall or the movie theater. Were those things she could honestly say that she missed out on? Were they important? Back then, her peers had definitely ranked those things among the important ones, but she had not.

With a shake of her head, Ava decided that no, she had missed out on nothing.

Directing her full attention once again to the forms, she smiled and continued writing.

Vacation, she thought happily.

Images of serene days and long, cool, peaceful evenings drifted through her mind. If she had someone with which to share the time off, would it be a better experience? More fulfilled and less alone? She almost wished there was a man in her life. Everything was better when you had someone to share it with. Comedies were funnier when there was someone sitting there with you, laughing right along at the silliness.

If Molly were here, she’d go with me, she thought. We’d have a blast.

But Molly wasn’t there. Molly hadn’t been there in years. As much as she hated to admit it, Molly might not even be alive anymore, and if she was, there might not be any of the old Molly left. She would be forever changed by what she had gone through, what she had survived at the hands of madmen and perverts.

Ava’s blood boiled, and her sudden grief turned to righteous rage as it always seemed to do when she thought about Molly and Prague.
