Chapter 5

Held tightly in his arms, Laurel lay lost in her thoughts for nearly an hour before she decided to slip out of bed. She eased out of his hold, pushing a pillow into the place she vacated. She held her breath when he turned over.

Once she was free, she retrieved her purse from the chair where she’d abandoned it the night before. Another missed call from Paul. She’d have to track him down today.

Not a morning person by nature, thoughts of the situation with Lee had her wide awake.

She tossed her purse down and padded to the bathroom, hoping to find a toothbrush, and take a shower. They’d shared a shower during the night. The cherry adventure had proved to be mighty sticky. A hot shower might be the thing to get her going.

The desk in the corner of the room caught her attention. Lee’s laptop sat in the middle of the desk, practically pulling her across the room. She wasn’t nosey so much as she was curious about Lee, about what he did every day.

About the last ten years.

His laptop was plugged in and the light was on. She settled her hand over the built-in mouse, and the screen came to life. Several files were minimized.

She couldn’t resist.

Her eyes darted to the bed, her gaze drawn to the bare leg tangled in the sheets. The long line of his leg turned into his muscular backside.

He looked like a peaceful little boy, his face resting on his palm, his features relaxed, the corded muscles of his forearm an utter contrast to the serene look on his face.

Her stomach tumbled, and something deep in her chest clenched, but she ignored it.

She clicked open the first file, a list of local businesses. At first glance it looked like a ledger of his new clients, but upon closer inspection she realized the list must contain both new and old clients, since several entries had detailed notes including both New Orleans and Lafayette addresses. The list fascinated her. Many were multi-million dollar corporations. Not that it surprised her. She knew Lee would be good at whatever he did.

Another file held information about rental properties in the area. The next file she closed as fast as she opened it, seeing a note addressed to her cousin Beau, Lee’s best friend. She wouldn’t invade that privacy.

The last file stopped her dead in her tracks. It was filled with information about the rec center, the center she’d tried desperately to reopen for the neighborhood kids.

The man had only just found out about the rec center. Apparently he planned to move full speed ahead, trying to find a way to reopen it. He would do it.

It was in his nature. He was a good man.

She sat completely still as the panic attack ripped through her. Her breathing became restricted. Her pulse pounded. She tried to take a deep breath, but couldn’t. Concentrating, she relaxed her mind as her body jerked in reaction. She hadn’t had a panic attack since the early days of opening the store.
