CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Paterson pulled up a few yards shy of Tanner’s front gate. Behind him, hidden by the trees, was a long line of police vehicles. He’d got everybody he wanted. Clocks got on the radio. ‘All units, standby. On my shout, Trojans to take the gate out, all others wait until DS Paterson and me follow them in.’ There was a collective burst of replies, each unit acknowledging they understood.

Clocks dropped the radio into his lap and took out his gun. Paterson patted his coat pocket, comforted by the weight of the Glock he carried.

‘Ready?’ said Paterson.

‘Born ready, guv,’ said Clocks, with a broad grin. He picked up the radio again. ‘Trojan One, Trojan One. Attack! Attack!’ He threw the radio down again and sat back in his seat as the SCO19 Land Rover, fitted out with a metal ram, hurtled past them. He watched in awe as the vehicle slammed into the metal gates, throwing them wide open. Paterson gunned the Aston and followed them in.

Ahead, Paterson could see the guard go into panic mode at the sight of the convoy of police vehicles steaming up the drive toward him. He smiled slightly. The guard was the same big black man they’d tangled with on their last visit. He saw the man hesitate, unsure of what to do next. By the time he’d made his decision — to raise the alarm — Trojan One had skidded to a gravel-spitting halt, decamped from their vehicle and hit him with 1,500 volts from a Taser.

Paterson and Clocks bailed out of their car and ran behind the SCO19 officers, weapons drawn. Earlier, the decision had been made to shotgun the door if necessary, and it turned out to be just that. With an ear-shattering bang, the lock was blown off and the door kicked in. The Trojans poured into the hallway, swinging raised guns from side to side. The two guards inside surrendered at once. The two lead Trojans grabbed them, threw them down onto their stomachs and began to secure them with plasticuffs. Their colleagues, following behind, moved on past them. No further resistance.

‘Door on the right!’ Paterson barked to them. One of the men kicked open the door and jumped back, flattening himself against the wall. He poked his head around the frame and took in the scene. Three men, two seated — one old, one dressed like a circus performer and one guard. This latter had a gun drawn and pointed at the Trojan.

‘You inside! Armed police! Drop your weapon. Do it now!’

Paterson and Clocks stopped dead in their tracks.

‘Put the gun down! We are heavily armed.’

After a few seconds, the guard shouted, ‘Okay, okay. It’s down.’

The Trojan peered around the door. It was. ‘Kick it over. Keep your hands up.’

The guard did as he was told and the Trojan, with backup, entered and secured the room. After a few seconds he shouted, ‘Safe!’

Paterson and Clocks walked in. The guard was down and cuffed. Sitting in his chair was Albert Tanner, his father next to him.
