Chapter Twenty-Two

“I would say the day wasn’t a complete failure.” Nathan chased an egg yolk around his plate with a piece of toast before looking up to see Marcie staring at him. Her dark brown eyes drew him like a moth to a flame every time. He always tried to read what was rolling around in her mind, but it was often fruitless. This morning she leaned on her arms on the table watching him with those eyes. A slight smile spread on her cheerful face as she listened.

“It wasn’t a failure at all. You spoke to the agents and you said you had their attention. That’s all you can hope for. Even that jerk Myers listened when you explained your situation. I’d say that’s a win. There are bound to be some flashbacks with the loud noises at the gun range. You can beat this monster, Nathan. You’re well on your way to doing it.” Marcie continued, “I read about a support group nearby. It sounds like they talk about their situations and generally try to help each other. Would you be interested?”

“The support group sounds interesting. I’ll give it some thought. Funny you called it a monster. I called it an invisible beast yesterday. It just struck me as I was talking to the group, but that’s what it is, Marce. And it’s determined.”

“Well, you slept well last night, sweetie. You died when your head hit the pillow.”

“I did. It has been a while since that happened.” Nathan wiped his mouth with a napkin and leaned back in his chair. “Oh, I didn’t tell you, Welchie is coming over to install a computer and some encrypted software so I can research the drone case in Canada. He should be here soon.”

“Oh?” This was news to Marcie. “Welchie” was James Welch, the computer expert at the FBI. He was a longtime friend of Nathan’s who had been a big help in the presidential assassination case. “So, you’re getting involved. I think you’re ready and I’ll help any way I can. But if he’s on his way, let’s clean up the dishes, so the place isn’t a mess when he gets here.”

As Marcie rose from the table, a tune played from the office. She recognized it as the notification that someone was trying to reach them by Skype. “That’ll probably be Shoni,” she said as she dashed into the office.

“This must be the day for catching up with old friends,” Nathan remarked as she raced by. “I’ll finish cleaning up.”

Nathan and Marcie met Shoni Batanga while they were in Tanzania, Africa, a few years back. Nathan was working a human trafficking case that Shoni had become embroiled in, and Marcie was visiting a school for orphans she helped fund. It was also when Marcie and Nathan met.

Nathan finished cleaning the kitchen and dropped into the office to say hello to Shoni. As he turned the corner, he heard her say, “Are you sure he’s okay? I miss you guys so much, and I wish I could come over there and see for myself.
