HOLIDAY INN
âWake up, Jock.â Cara pounded on his door. âI want to get out of here. Iâve waited for you long enough.â
âItâs only 6 A.M.â He opened the door. âAnd I donât believe we had an appointment.â He was fully dressed, and his hair was slightly damp from the shower. âOf course, I could be mistaken.â
âBut you know me. And you knew Iâd be waiting for you to call me after you talked to Joe. Why didnât you do it?â
âWould it have done any good?â His lips tightened. âI told Joe that I was done with trying to talk you into anything. Iâm strictly into damage control from now on. Itâs hardly my fault that you expected anything else. Did you have a bad night?â
âYes. You probably knew I would. Everything you do and say has an effect on me. I canât dismiss it. I tend to worry. Was it supposed to be punishment?â
âPerhaps. Though I wasnât aware of it. Iâve been a bit frustrated lately. I had a few things to do and thought Iâd be better served doing them than arguing with you.â
âWhat things?â Then she made an impatient gesture. âNever mind. Later. I have to get out of here. Are you coming with me?â
âCertainly. Damage control is impossible long-distance.â He came out of the room and locked the door. âAnd where am I supposed to be going?â
âJust away from this hotel.â She was crossing to her rental car, parked in front of the door of her room. âI was smothering, and I knew that if I took off on my own, youâd be tracking me down like Joeâs doing to Svardak. So I thought Iâd just take you with me.â
âWise decision. It saves so much time.â He glanced at her violin case on the backseat of the car. âAnd I see you invited another old friend to come along. Iâm sure the Amati is considerably more welcome than I am right now.â
âWell, it doesnât cause me as much trouble.â She opened the driverâs door. âThough I couldnât play last night. Violin music is generally not welcome in the middle of the night in hotels. Particularly not old hotels with walls as thin as this one. I needed to play, and I couldnât do it.â
âObviously Iâm not the only one who was feeling frustrated last night.â He got into the passengerâs seat. âThose other guests donât know what they missed. Where do you want to go?â
âYou tell me.â She backed out of the parking spot. âI donât know anything about this place. You might say Iâve had limited access up in that canyon. You must have explored the entire area while you searched for me. Just somewhere I wonât bother anyone.â She shivered. âAnd thatâs not anywhere near Lost Canyon.â
âNot too difficult. Go straight down this road for a few miles and turn left on Patriots River Road until you get to the riverbank. Itâs fairly deserted, and no one but the birds will object to a little Tchaikovsky.
