Halfway home, I remember Iâm supposed to meet Joel, so turn around and drive to the Crown Courtâs car park.
Once inside, Iâm checked by the guards then asked for my ID. All the while I feel weird, suspicious almost, as if when my bag is scanned theyâll discover a bloody knife nestled between my book and lipstick. Everything about this place has me on edge. High ceilings that make you feel small, statues whose eyes follow you through the halls. Itâs overwhelming and Iâm glad I took this dry run before my testimony. At least now Iâll know what to expect.
Waiting on a lumpy seat in the lobby, I watch people walk through the security gates. Itâs easy to spot the barristers; today is like any other to them. The victims and accused are obvious too, and strangely look the same: concerned and uncomfortable. When Joel comes in, however, he doesnât sport the determined mask the other barristers wear. Instead, when he sees me, worry passes across his face.
âCourt starts in half an hour.â He pauses, then adds, âYou remember you canât come in?â
âHello to you too,â I snap, getting to my feet. I then say, âSorry.â My residual anger has no place with Joel. Lindsayâs murder isnât his fault.
âThatâs okay. Tense times all round.â
âI need to tell you something.â
âWhatâs wrong?â Joel asks.
Iâm about to blurt out the news of Lindsayâs death when Paul approaches us, making me hesitate.
âTell you later,â I say.
Paul looks from me to his colleague. âHave I missed something?â
âNothing,â Joel tells him. Looking at me, he says, âIâll see you in a few hours at the coffee place down the road.â
âOf course. I brought a book. Iâ¦â I trail off when someone catches my eye. Itâs Tyler Baker, flanked by police. For a moment, my mind fogs. Iâm breathing the same air as him â again. Shaking off this thought, I then notice how different he now looks, hair cut neat and clean shaven. He looks normal, not a would-be serial killer. Horror washes over me. This new Tyler canât be who the jury see â itâs not right.
âFallon?â Paul asks.
Tyler hasnât seen me. Heâs too busy grimacing at everyone who walks by. Acting the innocent man accused.
âFallon?â
If things had gone differently, could I have killed him that night? Murder is in my DNA. If I had ended his life, would it be me in handcuffs today?
âFallon!â Paul is staring at me.
âSorry,â I say. âWhat?â
âYou should go.â Joel gently grips my elbow and turns me towards the exit.
âSure,â I mutter, but as I turn back to see the new and improved Tyler again, I find heâs gone.
