CHAPTER EIGHT

MARC and Laurie headed for the patisserie on Thursday lunchtime to buy sandwiches—running the gauntlet of more good-natured teasing by Tina—and ate them in the sunshine on the bench by the duck pond.

There was nobody around to hear him, but Marc lowered his voice anyway. ‘Right now, Dr Grant, I’d really like to kiss you. Like I did last night.’

Laurie went deliciously pink. And then he remembered how she’d looked as she’d climaxed, her eyes wide and her skin flushed like that, and went decidedly hot under his own collar.

‘Marc,’ she said in a warning whisper.

‘I’m not going to do it—at least, not in the middle of the town where anyone could see us and start gossiping,’ he reassured her. ‘Besides, we don’t want to scare the ducks.’

To his relief, she smiled back. ‘Absolutely. Otherwise I’ll have to give them double rations next time I come.’

‘Saturday morning?’ he asked.

‘Not this week—I checked the weather forecast and it’s going to be glorious, so I’m taking Izzy to the beach.’ She gave him a sidelong look. ‘How are you on rock pools and crabbing?’

‘Rock pools and crabbing?’ he echoed, mystified.

She shook her head and tutted. ‘You’re such a Londoner! I was wondering, would you like to come with us?’ When he said nothing, she added softly, ‘No strings.’

Well, he knew she came as a package. And he wanted to see more of her. So he’d just have to shove all the guilt back where it came from, and make an effort to get to know Izzy, too. ‘I’d like that. Thank you.’

‘Shall I pick you up at nine?’ she suggested.

‘Or I could pick you up.’

She shook her head. ‘Izzy’s seat is already in my car. Besides, I wouldn’t want to get yours messy.’

‘I’m not that much of a neat freak,’ he said.

‘No?’ she teased.

‘No.’ He couldn’t resist leaning closer and whispering, ‘And you can ruffle me any time you like, Dr Grant.’

‘Marc!’ But she was laughing.

‘What do I need to bring?’

‘Nothing—I have the bucket, spade, beach towels and sun cream. So just yourself.’

‘Is Cocoa coming, too?’

‘Dogs aren’t allowed on the beach in summer, so Mum and Dad are going to pop round to let him out. It’ll be just the three of us.’

Just the three of us.

He was being given a second chance at a family.

Did he dare to take it?

* * *

On Saturday morning, Laurie knocked on Marc’s front door at nine. She was wearing cut-off faded denim shorts, a bright pink T-shirt and espadrilles, and looked adorably cute. He itched to kiss her but he knew that he couldn’t, not with Izzy there. Before they went public, she’d need to talk to Izzy. And, given how Laurie’s relationship with Dean had ended and the way the man had destroyed her trust, Marc knew that it would take a while until she was ready. Giving her time to get used to the idea worked for him, too; he wasn’t entirely sure that he was ready for this. Though he did know that he wanted to see more of Laurie.
