MIKE JOURNAL ENTRY 10

Nothing happened the rest of that day, although I may have shagged, boned, banged, boinked, shtupped, scored, rutted—or my personal favorite—ground some corn with my wife. And though I can neither confirm nor deny the act, that memory ain’t going anywhere. I may be blushing, my face feels flushed. On another note, the labbies, short for lab coats or scientists or doctors or whatever I felt like calling them at the moment, were convinced we were now three days from having a viable product. They’d called an emergency meeting to discuss what they were calling a “minor setback.” BT’s argument to flee had gained weight. I was pissed; seeing that dangling carrot being pulled away was infuriating. We had no effin’ choice. How many more delays could we survive? Could I flip again? I realize it’s a woman’s prerogative, but this was getting absurd. Soon I wouldn’t be able to make a decision that would stick. Seventy-two hours, a long weekend's worth. Of course, unlike that mini vacation, these hours were going to drag by like a damned trio of Mondays.

I’d watched enough action flicks in my life to know that we were racing toward the grand finale; can’t build up the suspense and not have an explosive climax to fulfill the destiny of the promised denouement. This was the one time I hoped the audience was not given what they came for. If only we could just ride off into the sunset without first having that shootout.

I was up on the top floor, surveying what I knew was about to again become a battlefield. Movement below caught my attention. I was certain I knew who it was, but used binoculars to confirm that it was Avalyn out walking the dead zone, meandering around the bodies, sometimes stopping. Tough to tell from this distance, but it looked like she was talking, to whom, I had no clue. I headed downstairs. I had a feeling she was going to play a big role in our ability to escape.

“Boy, I hope I’m being prophetic,” I said. “Maybe give the audience some foreshadowing.”

“Sir?” Of course I had to pass by someone just as I spoke my thoughts out loud.

“Nothing,” I told Kirby.

“Sir, do you have a minute?”

I could see Avalyn, she didn’t appear to be going anywhere, not with a quickness at any rate. And what the fuck was she doing out there anyway? The more I looked the more disturbing it seemed. Why would anyone want to willingly stroll along among that much death?

“Um, yeah,” I said to him as I pulled my gaze away. “What’s up?” I wasn’t thrilled with how rattled Avalyn had gotten me, so much so that my military decorum had slipped far enough to be conversational with one of my charges while on duty. If he noticed, he didn’t react. (Kirby was a lot of things, an actor wasn’t one of them. He’d definitely missed it.)

“It’s about Rose, sir.”

“This in regards to anything squad-related?” I asked.
