Chapter 6

Knowing she had someone on her side had Jessica feeling a little better. But she couldn’t force herself to go to Simon, not alone. It took another talk from Craig before Jessica felt as though she was strong enough to face the deputy marshal. Craig even offered to go with her, just moral support. Jessica took him up on that offer.

As the night wore on she didn’t want him to leave, but she knew he must. Eventually, Craig had said his goodnights and walked home, albeit reluctantly.

It was unseemly for the two of them to meet on her back porch, unchaperoned and in darkness. Someone was bound to get the wrong idea. However, Jessica was beginning to wonder if she really cared. Craig gave her such comfort, it was something she hadn’t had in a long time.

When was the last time anyone had come to her aid, believed her in anything? She couldn’t remember. The faith that Craig had in her was humbling.

It was no wonder she had fallen in love with him. And Jessica may have been naïve, but she wasn’t entirely daft. She knew what she felt for Craig was intense, even though it wasn’t right. Jessica had intended to become a nun. She had taken some vows and had been meant to take more.

Then again, she had been forced into that position; somehow, she thought that Mother Superior would understand. It didn’t matter, Jessica didn’t think she would be back in the convent anytime soon, she was more likely to end up in jail.

Jessica headed back to bed as Craig left, surprised to find that she wasn’t struggling to sleep anymore. Maybe confessing was what she needed to do. Whatever it was, she said a quick prayer then fell into a deep sleep.

Jessica woke early and slipped out before the other girls got up. If they saw the look on her face and had picked up on her blink the way Craig had, the three of them would know Jessica was up to something. She didn’t want to get into an argument with anyone about it. This was the right thing to do, even if the others would object.

Craig was waiting outside the gate as Jessica left her house. It was like he hadn’t left, his clothes were the same from the day before. He didn’t say a word for a moment as Jessica reached him, he simply watched her closely. Then he took her hand, drawing her closer, and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips.

Jessica started back and stared at him, then wished she had held her ground.

“What was that for?”

“Some moral support.” Craig’s mouth twitched. “To give you some strength.”

Jessica was momentarily stunned. No one had ever kissed her before. She touched her mouth in some wonder, still feeling the tingle of Craig’s lips on hers. Then she realized Craig was watching her and she blushed.

“I think we’d better go. I’m going to lose my nerve if we don’t.”

Craig didn’t say anything, merely
