Chapter 10

“Hey, how’d it go?” Taylor asked as Cody and I entered the suite. I threw my purse on the couch and flopped next to him.

“We left early,” Cody answered, tugging off his tie – or rather, Dex’s tie. Cody hadn’t packed for an awards ceremony, and he had borrowed a suit from Dex. Dex hadn’t really planned on it either – he was just always prepared.

“What’s that?” Taylor asked, gesturing to the placard next to my purse.

“This?” I pulled it out and handed it to him. “I got an award.”

“Did you get the internship?” he asked, taking it from me.

I shook my head. “I don’t know, probably not.”

Taylor raised his eyes from the award and frowned at me. I sighed. I told him about Bethany White and the bathroom incident and then I told him and Cody both that I wasn’t so sure anymore how much I wanted to come to Washington DC. It was a beautiful city. It had been an adventure and a fun time. Perhaps, though, I was happier where I was at in Winthrope. Touring the Washington Post and meeting all of those people was a memory I would never forget. But if I had to deal with people like Bethany White, and I knew there were going to be others like her both as peers and as managers, maybe I was better off freelancing my journalism.

Behind us the door opened, and the rich smell of mozzarella cheese and tomatoes met my nostrils. “Fuck yes!” Cody said excitedly. He practically leaped out of his chair and tackled Dex and Darren. “Pizza!”

Taylor smiled as he watched him go. “Did you not feed that boy?” he asked.

“We left before the food arrived,” I admitted.

Taylor shook his head and got up from his chair. He leaned over and pressed a kiss to my cheek before he pulled me up. “Come on, honeybunch, let’s eat.”

I laughed and followed behind him as we joined the others.

We ate, and we drank the ridiculously expensive wine Dex had procured for us. Taylor announced that he had packed video games and his console – talk about being prepared – and I found myself knee deep in the cushions of the couch, as Darren, Taylor, and I battled it out with Cody and Dex watching on, waiting for their turn.

Hours later, after the fifth yawn – Dex shut off the console and ordered the five of us to bed. I groaned and folded my arms across my chest. Taylor, deciding that – despite my obvious adorableness – Dex was right, picked me up in his arms and carried me off to his room. Cody followed behind as Darren and Dex said their goodnights.

Taylor laid me on the bed and curled up behind me as Cody crawled in on the other side of the bed. I yawned again.

“You never told us,” Taylor said. “How’d you manage to sneak out?”

“I climbed to the other balcony,” I admitted, shifting around.

There was a brief silence. “I hope Dex spanked you good, Jamie,” Cody said darkly.
