Chapter Six

“You want me.” Kane’s voice was deep, and huskier than he would have liked. Josie was looking up at him as if enthralled by what she saw. It was disconcerting. Hell, it was arousing.

“Is that so hard to fathom?” she whispered. “A woman wanting you?”

He swore under his breath. Hell no, being wanted by a woman wasn’t hard to fathom. Other women had wanted him over the years. There was that woman from Topeka—what was her name? And that aspiring model from California—Krissy, or Mindy, or Sissy, or something.

Kane felt a headache coming on. This should have been simple, but he was beginning to realize that nothing was simple with Josie. It wasn’t that she wasn’t bright. She was amazingly well-read and well-informed for a girl from the hills who had little in the way of higher education. No, the problem wasn’t with her. He was the one with the problem, because it seemed that he couldn’t think straight whenever he came within fifteen feet of her.

Willing the grogginess in his head to clear, he took a backward step and strode to a makeshift shelf where he examined the birdhouses Josie had built. Three of them had roofs made out of bark and were fashioned into rustic-style houses. One looked like a church, complete with a steeple and one was reminiscent of an old-fashioned general store. The workmanship was amazing, Josie’s eye for detail evident in every piece. He wondered where she’d acquired her skill, and fleetingly tried to recall if he’d ever dated another woman who liked to build things. Damn, he couldn’t remember that, either.

Okay, maybe he couldn’t remember the names of the women he’d seen over the years or some of the more pertinent details of their personalities, but he remembered the lengthy conversations he’d had with them following their declarations of love. After he’d explained that he wasn’t the forever type, a woman usually cried. He hated tears, but he would have hated to lead someone on even more. A woman tended to grow tired of having a relationship with a man who could offer her no future. More often than not, she stopped calling or stopping by. Sooner or later he usually heard that she’d married somebody else.

“Is being wanted so hard to fathom, Kane?”

The sound of Josie’s voice behind him brought him out of his reverie. Scowling, he said, “I haven’t been living the life of a monk, if that’s what you’re asking.”

There. Let her chew on that for a while. Maybe if he made her angry she would face the facts and agree that this had been a mistake.

“It’s nice to know that at least one of us has had some fun. What we were doing in the mountain cabin was fun, wasn’t it?”

Fun? Was that what she called it? He made the mistake of giving her a sidelong glance, and found her looking up at him, a come-hither light in her eyes, a tender smile on her lips. He would only have to bend slightly and lower his face to hers, to cover her lips with his.
