That was the last thing I thought I’d see when I stepped from the clearing and onto the street. I recognized the car, and for a fleeting moment, I wondered about the coincidence. My heart galloped a mile a minute as I walked cautiously towards the car, my eyes scouring the area and my breath bated.

What is he doing here? Did something happen to Mom?

I hadn’t spoken to her since leaving DC. Being that close to her again had turned me into her, I felt I had to run from that. But what was the point? I had come home with a piece of Gerald inside me, and that wouldn’t go away. My heart thumped and my legs grew heavy as I got closer, and then I saw him. Right next to Lucy.

“Who’s that?” Cody asked innocently.

“A mirage,” I mumbled and untangled myself from his embrace. Gerald looked at me, and something inside me moved. Oh shit! What do I do now?

It was as if Cody plucked the thought right out of my mind. “It’s him, isn’t it? You gonna tell him about the baby?”

“No!” I shot back. “And don’t you dare say anything about it, Cody,” I warned. “He’ll be leaving soon, anyway.”

We met somewhere in the middle, and I was aware of the audience we had inadvertently summoned. They stood poised, ready for the latest gossip.

“What are you doing here?” I asked him. Lucy stood there like she had a right to be there, so I folded my arms and stared at her. “Don’t you have somewhere else to be, Lucy?” She stalked off, wearing a pout, though constantly looking back like I had snatched something from her. “Oh, this is Cody, by the way. He’s my best friend.”

He extended his hand, which Cody grasped firmly. “Nice to meet you, Cody. I heard a little about you.”

“You been talking about me, Angie?” He grinned and glanced at me.

“Just a little bit.” I blushed. “Could you give us a moment?”

“Sure,” he replied. He tipped his hat at Gerald and whistled as he walked down the street. He was the only one who didn’t think he was at the movies and needed a play by play commentary of what happened with me and Gerald.

I faced Gerald, shocked he was in Riverside. I hugged myself as I suddenly felt a chill, which probably gave him an idea, for he charged into me, knocking the breath out of me when he did. I gasped, and then my arms unfolded, and I pressed against him. He felt like he was shaking, and as I was reminded of his essence, I realized how much I had missed him.

“Why did you leave?” he whispered against my neck.

“I didn’t know what else to do,” I answered. My voice was shaky, and I trembled with him.

He pulled back, though his hands didn’t leave my body. They lingered on my hips as he gave me an odd look. “What’s wrong with you? You look pale.”

He touched my face and my eyes shifted, trying to hide what I couldn’t remain a secret.
