CHAPTER EIGHT

‘BUENOS DÍAS, CARIÑO.’

‘Buenos días, guapo. Has dormido bien?’

Emiliano froze in surprise and stared at the woman bathed in sunlight on the terrace of his villa.

‘You speak Spanish?’ he asked.

A light flush tinged her cheeks before she responded hesitantly, ‘Un poco, pero estoy tratando.’

He carried on walking towards her, his senses reeling a little as he pulled out the chair and joined her at the breakfast table. In the typical style of the woman who’d managed his acquisitions with exemplary intelligence, she’d perfected the nuance and intonation of his mother tongue, and even found a way to thread sensuality through the words. ‘You’re more than trying,’ he responded, noting the gruffness in his voice. ‘You excel at it.’

She grinned before a plump segment of mango found its way into her mouth. Watching her tongue dart out to lick a drop of juice from the corner of her mouth lit an instant fire in his groin. Combined with the white bikini set clinging to her body, its existence poorly disguised by the see-through mesh sarong, he knew the next half hour would be a true test of his control.

They’d been on his private island off the coast of the Bahamas a little over a week. Each day had brought the challenge of seeing her in a different swimsuit and wrestling with the increasingly uncontrollable urge to touch her. It also hadn’t gone past his notice that her costumes were getting skimpier with each passing day.

It was the reason he’d banished the villa’s employees to the staff bungalow yesterday. Only Alfie was allowed into the main residence without express permission, the fact that he was gay barely giving him a pass.

‘How long have you been keeping this from me?’ he asked, concentrating all his efforts on pouring steaming black coffee...slowly...to take his mind off the satin-soft skin on display.

Her smile widened, still blindingly beautiful, her green eyes lighting up. ‘I woke up this morning and the memory just appeared. I remembered I’d been listening to tapes, although I can’t remember where I got them from or how long I’ve been learning. I’m guessing from your reaction that you didn’t know, so... Surprise!’

The rigid tension charging through his body made him wonder how he was managing to set the coffee pot down without breaking it. ‘No, I didn’t know. And, yes, it’s a wonderful surprise.’ He paused a beat, then asked offhandedly, ‘Did you remember anything else?’

Her smile dimmed then switched off completely. A vice tightened viciously around his chest. He wanted to pre-empt the words that she was about to utter with...something. But none were forthcoming. So he sat and awaited the falling axe.

‘I...I know now why no one came to see me at the hospital. Besides you.’

His gaze probed her face, noted her distress. ‘Tell me,’ he encouraged, the need to know overcoming whatever consequences lay in his future.

Her gaze dropped. He fought the urge to nudge her delicate chin up and watched her.

‘I remember my childhood. I’m an orphan, Emiliano.
