Chapter Nine

The ride to the complex was uneventful, except for most of the team sneaking sideways glances at Imara and Elle. Tanya suspected Char and Sophie were dying to interrogate them but didn’t quite know what to ask. None of the women seemed to consider Tanya a threat. She sighed. Once again, she was a throwaway player in this little drama. She still wondered how she’d managed to catch Elle’s eye. Elle insisted she was special, but Tanya was never one to stick out in a crowd. She’d politely acknowledged all of the women but hadn’t tried to engage in conversation or offer any explanation on their sudden arrival. It wasn’t Tanya’s place to do that. Besides, her head was throbbing and she wasn’t in the mood for any lengthy conversation. She was glad none of the others were either.

When they reached the nondescript cabin, Tanya smiled. The place fit what she had envisioned when she’d read the book. She worried about Dani navigating the tunnel without her crutches. They came to a stop several feet from the cabin, presumably a safe location away from any explosives strategically placed on the perimeter. Char jumped from the car and hurried to the vehicle Dani had ridden in. She helped Dani to the cabin and Jai followed. Elle provided a solid body for Tanya to lean on as she wobbled along. Perhaps the chunk that landed on her head did more damage than she’d originally thought. The dizziness seemed to increase with every step.

“You okay?” Elle asked. “You’re looking a bit peaked all of a sudden.”

“I’ll be fine.” Tanya gritted through the pain of her pounding head.

Val stopped before the door that would lead them into the underground tunnels. “If anything, and I mean anything, bad happens as a result of leading you into the complex, I will personally make it my mission to hunt each and every one of you down. I don’t have a problem slicing my enemies into tiny pieces to feed to the fishes.”

“I’d rather you hunt down the bastard responsible for sending us into this little nightmare. Trust me, you all aren’t exactly the best welcoming committee to this world. I would have preferred jumping into a nice romance instead,” Imara wryly answered. “If I find Vlad, will you promise to feed him to the fish?”

Val shook her head. “Freak.”

Soon they came to the infirmary, and a tall brunette with an air of authority met them. Tanya suspected the woman was Cindy, Ronda’s lover and the nurse practitioner for The Organization.

“Okay who needs patching up now?” Cindy’s eyes narrowed at Tanya. “Who is this?”

“I was caught in the flying debris from the explosion. A chunk of something hit my head. The blood flow has slowed, so I don’t think I’m in any real danger,” Tanya blurted out in an effort to assure Elle she was all right. “I’m Tanya, by the way. It’s nice to meet you, Cindy.”

Char, Toni, Val, Sophie, and Ronda all exchanged a look of disbelief.
