Julia and Mr. Cairo

I’m going through the list Peter gave me. The main item is to pick up Mr. Cairo’s prescriptions on the way over to their apartment. It is Julia’s canasta day, so Mr. Cairo and I will have time to communicate. As I walk to the drugstore on 23rd Street, I keep thinking about the people who lived in Peter’s apartment before he did—the Michaels. If I find them, I may find the mysterious Kasper Greenstreet. Peter has given me complete access in my pursuit of Kasper; I have the name and number of the super of the building. I tried calling him a couple of times, but he never picks up. Can you imagine if you really needed help?

I’ve thought about it more than once, and people from the mystic group say it point-blank, “You may be dealing with a spirit.” Honestly, a ghost would be the easiest explanation. However, the reason I do not believe that Kasper is a ghost is that Aunt Paula saw him on the street. I’m pretty sure that Peter also saw him on 2nd Avenue the night he walked me home.

What I’ve read—what I’ve been told—is that, typically, ghosts stay locked into one place. Kasper is wandering all over the city. Smoking in front of the building, following us around like he is part of the living. Not at all like the spirits in the subway.

I am ahead of schedule and decide to stop at Peter’s apartment. Once inside, I decide this is the day. I will do my ritual. I light some white sage and walk through the apartment, trying to smudge and spread it everywhere. Next, I light some sandalwood. If it works in exorcisms, maybe it will keep this guy—spirit—out of the apartment. Standing in the center of his living room, I say a prayer that the apartment will be free of whatever is causing this turmoil. Finally, I hang two dream catchers, one in the living room by the window where I first spotted Kasper. I’m thinking I should hang the second in Peter’s bedroom, so he can sleep better.

As I open his closet, the sound of the guest bedroom door slams. Turning, I hold the dream catcher up much the same way a vampire hunter in an old movie would hold up a cross. I walk slowly toward the doorway with Peter’s bat. Just in case it’s an actual living person.

The door to the guest bedroom is closed. I hang the dream catcher on the door knob—it is ice cold, which alarms me.

It brings me back to Stevie’s hospital room. The night we had to change his room because it was unnaturally cold. That was when the shadows were at their worst, trying to get at him every night.

The chill outside the door snaps me back to the present. Now what? I push the door open, bat ready for action. It’s even colder inside the room. No one is in the bedroom; I check the windows to see if they are open.
