Thrower was sitting outside at one of the tables, a bandage on the back of his head. He had his elbows on the table and his hands pressed against his forehead. A few seconds later, Ortiz came around through the side gate with the other guard. Thrower looked over at him, pleased to see that he wasnât killed, though it looked like he was sporting a bad end of it, too. The guard was also holding his head. Ortiz brought him over to the table, the guard sitting across from Thrower.
âI am sorry,â Pedro said.
Thrower flicked his hand in the air as he sat back. He wasnât in any position to talk.
âI failed. There is no excuse for my actions.â
âYouâre not the only one,â Thrower said.
Pedro looked around. âWhat about Fernando?â
Thrower squinted, not even giving the second guard much thought until now. It was a good question, though. Where was Fernando? Why didnât he put up any effort to stop the kidnapping? He would have been closer than either Thrower or Pedro, considering they were both out front by the gate. But Thrower hadnât seen him at all during this whole situation.
âManuel,â Thrower said. âWhere is Fernando?â
Ortiz looked perplexed as well, as he threw his arms out. âI donât know. I havenât seen him.â
âYou donât think thatâs strange?â
âI donât know. I assumed you had him doing something.â
Thrower shook his head. âHe shouldnât be doing anything but standing guard.â
Ortiz put his finger in the air as he started to back away. âLet me go check.â
âHowâd they get you?â Thrower asked his partner.
Pedro shook his head, still not believing what had happened. âI was sitting there in my chair. And then I started to hear noises.â He waved his hand in the air to illustrate how small they were. âNothing big. Just little noises. It sounded like someone brushing up against the leaves and bushes. Maybe an animal or something. Since nothing else was going on, I decided to go have a look. I get out there, and pow, I immediately feel something come down on the back of my head. I must have passed out because I donât remember anything that happened after that until Mr. Ortiz helped me.â
Thrower nodded. âYeah. I came out to look for you and wound up with the same fate.â
âWhat are we going to do?â
âWe gotta get that kid back, thatâs what.â
âBut how? We donât even know who these people are or where they are.â
âWe have to find out,â Thrower said.
They sat there for a few more minutes, talking about everything that had gone wrong over the last hour. Then Ortiz came outside, his arm around Angelinaâs shoulder. They walked over to the table. Once they got closer, Angelina broke free of him and ran over to Thrower. She put her hands on his arms.
âWe have to get Rosa back! Please, we have to get her back!â
Thrower stood up and put his arms around her. He knew she was hurting. âWeâll get her back. I promise you, weâll get her back.
