Chapter 17

Ansel had to turn up the thermostat when they got up on Friday. Their nice weather had fled. It had lasted longer than usual this year. Jazzi looked out their bedroom window at the woods behind the pond. The leaves were changing. A breeze rippled the surface of the water. A few yellow leaves were scattered across it.

They pulled on heavy jackets and bundled up Toby to leave the house. George shivered as he settled on the backseat of the van, not a fan of cold weather. When they reached the warehouse and dropped off Toby, they went to buy cups of coffee and to say hello to Elspeth and Fazal. A woman was standing at the counter—tall and thin with gray hair and a strange looking mutt on a leash. Its legs were too short and its tail too long.

When she saw Jazzi glance at the dog, she smiled. “I live downtown and saw him rummaging through garbage cans in alleys. I knew he needed a home.”

“How nice of you.” Jazzi bent to pet him, and his curly tail wagged with happiness.

The woman smiled. “He’s the sweetest little thing. I take him for a walk every morning. I always stop here first to buy some specialty coffee and a scone to enjoy as we go.”

Jazzi nodded down the hall. “I drop our baby off here every morning for Aleena to babysit. It was so chilly out today, we decided to grab some coffee on our way to work.”

The woman looked wistful. “You come here every morning at about this time? Did you hear about the poor man who was killed next door? I saw a car parked in that lot when I left here that day.”

Jazzi stared. “Do you remember it? The victim was one of Fazal’s best friends.” When the woman frowned, Jazzie explained, “He bakes the breads here.”

“Such a nice person. I’ve bought lots of focaccia from him on my way home.” She stopped to remember. “The car I saw was a silver Mercedes. It surprised me to see such an expensive car there. Most of the people who rent the kitchens aren’t rich enough to have their own restaurants.”

“Thank you for telling me,” Jazzi said. “I have a detective friend who’s investigating the case. I’ll tell him.”

“I hope he catches whoever did it,” the woman said. “Elspeth said the poor man who got killed was especially nice.”

Jazzi patted the dog one more time before Elspeth handed the woman her coffee and scone, and she left.

Elspeth watched her go. “Flora’s a sweetheart. She lives at Midtowne Crossing and walks her dog twice a day. She always stops here for coffee and a scone.”

“Did she tell you she saw a car next door on the morning Jordan died?” Jazzi asked.

“No, but it doesn’t surprise me she told you. Everyone talks to you,” Elspeth teased.

On their drive to Michael’s, Jazzi called Gaff and told him what she’d heard.

“A silver Mercedes?” He rustled through some papers. “Dori drives a car like that.
