Twenty-Five

Tuesday, 14 August – Late Afternoon

The squad car pulled up outside 62 Gate Street, and Ian and Lucy got out. A chest-high brick wall hid the weed-riddled front garden and the wheelie bins propped up under the window from view. The house was quite some way down from Fergus Doherty’s but looked identical with its red brick and white, plastic-framed windows and front door.

Glenn Powers, in khaki shorts and matching T-shirt bearing a logistics company logo, answered the door and showed them into the kitchen where his son, Noah, was perched on a stool, a toasted sandwich in his hand. He nodded in their direction and mumbled, ‘All right?’ as a greeting before taking a large bite. Tomato ketchup oozed from it to plop onto the plate.

‘Sorry to disturb you but we need to ask Noah some questions about Erin and Ivy Westmore,’ said Lucy, acknowledging the boy.

The man’s eyes narrowed and he asked, ‘Why?’

‘Are you aware the twins were found dead on Sunday afternoon?’

‘Yes. Noah told me about it. His friends told him.’

‘You knew the girls well, didn’t you?’ Lucy directed her question to the teenager.

Noah swallowed his mouthful. ‘Not exactly.’

‘How well did you know them?’

‘What do you mean?’ he asked casually.

‘Well, enough to go to the Rocket Café with them last Wednesday.’

He deliberated before answering. ‘Yeah. That’s right. We had a drink with them.’

‘And?’

‘That’s all. They went home.’

Ian looked up from his notepad. ‘You meet up any other times?’

‘A few.’

‘You saw them regularly?’ Ian asked.

‘We hung out a bit.’

Ian nodded. ‘We? Do you mean you and Harry Brown?’

‘Yeah.’

Ian made a note of the name and allowed Lucy to continue. ‘When was the last time you saw the twins?’

‘Wednesday. We met them outside the library and then we all went to the café.’ He inspected his sandwich rather than look at Lucy, and she wondered if he was telling the truth.

‘Is that all you did… hang out with the girls?’

‘Dunno what you mean,’ he replied. He cast a furtive look in his father’s direction.

Lucy picked up on it. ‘Were you going out with them?’ she asked.

‘Going out?’ He sneered at the suggestion. ‘That sounds dead serious and grown up.’

‘You know what I mean.’

‘You mean did we get off with each other?’ He shook his head with a semi-smirk on his face as if Lucy had suggested something amusing. When she didn’t answer he replied with, ‘No.’

‘You were seen with the twins on more than one occasion – one of those was during a school lunchtime when you were inside their school building, which I understand is against the rules. What were you doing by the lockers?’

‘We only went to have a look around their school. They suggested it. We were talking when one of their teachers told us to clear off.’

‘What were you talking about?’

‘Can’t remember.’

‘You can’t remember?’

‘No. It was ages ago.’ He shrugged and pulled a piece of sandwich off, popped it into his mouth and chewed with his mouth open.

Lucy tried again. ‘We’re trying to find out why the twins left their house on Saturday night.
