Chapter Sixteen

In Soren’s classroom, I pace the floor in front of his desk as angry flames pulsate along my body. Soren leans back in his seat behind his desk, arms crossed over his chest. Jesse sits perched on a desk near me and he casually observes my pacing. I’m so angry, I can barely think. That fight with Agatha was close. The harpy eagle she controls damn near took my arm off. And I’m sure if I had stayed there a moment longer, Herbert would have taken off my head.

“Are you going to tell us what this is about?” Soren asks as his eyes follow my pacing. There’s a hitch of concern in his voice that makes me look at him.

“Agatha,” I finally say. I’m not able to give any more information just yet. The name says it all. At least, the name should say enough until I can calm down and actually go into further detail. I keep running the whole event through my mind. The audacity of keeping a bloodthirsty bird in the commons room, the controlling and manipulative way she practically dangled me in front of the giant bird.

“Yes, we both understand she’s behind your sudden change in mood,” he says, almost pensively, “but why? Tell us what happened, Wren.”

I glare at Soren. Not because I’m mad at him, but because I am just so freaking angry. He doesn’t even flinch. I almost smirk. I’m grateful that he just lets me pace and process as much as I need to until I’m ready to talk. Jesse too. Both of them patiently wait. I keep taking deep breaths to try to help, but the more I think about her and the overgrown pigeon, the angrier I get.

“You’re hot. Literally,” Jesse says with a devious smirk. “We should ignite her more often.”

My pacing is thrown off by that comment as I stop to look at him. He smirks proudly, like he knows he got to me. That was a clever move on his part. I take in my skin, the subtle glow traveling down my arms, and the heat radiating from my forearms. I shake my head, laughing sarcastically under my breath. “I highly recommend you don’t. This isn’t exactly fun for me.”

He shrugs. “Well, I mean you’re smoking hot on any given day. But it’s nice to see you smiling.”

And I truly am. I didn’t realize it until he pointed it out to me. Being with them helps me to calm down, if even a little.

I take in a deep, calming breath. The flames along my skin start to die down and my skin radiates with golden magic. “Trust me, I would rather be destroying something right now.” I face my two men. “Did you guys know she has a harpy eagle chained up in the commons of Drakon?”

Soren sits forward, anger burning through his eyes. “What.” It’s not really a question but comes out more like a statement of disbelief. It’s flat, and deep.

I nod and hold up two fingers, counting them off as I explain.
