Ash swaggered down the street, his pockets heavy with coins. The people in this part of the Institute weren’t poor, but they didn’t want to go to the hospital and explain their injuries and illnesses. He’d made a fortune by healing simple stab wounds and rashes that the patients preferred not to talk about.

He rounded a corner and came to Drey’s herb shop.

“Thought I’d be seeing you again!” Drey said as soon as Ash entered.

“You know what I’m here for.”

“I do. But this time you won’t be robbing me.”

“I’ll pay what’s fair. No more.”

“Three Marks. One dose.”

Ash folded his arms across his chest. “I’ll give you ten Marks for eleven doses.”

Drey’s eyes widened. “You’ve come into some money then.”

“That’s my final offer. I’m sure there are others that I can buy from.”

“Okay, okay. I can accept a discount for people who buy in bulk.”

He fiddled under his counter and brought up a metal box covered in intricate designs. “This is something special for my… favorite clients. If you want more, just bring this box along and I’ll fill it up. In exchange for coins, of course.”

“Of course,” Ash said.

Drey pushed the box across the counter but kept his hand on the lid.

Ash fished in his pocket and counted out eleven Marks. He still had three left which was more than he’d had to his own name in quite some time.

He tossed the coins onto the counter. They clattered and spun.

“Lovely doing business with you.” Drey released the box.

Ash snatched it up and carried it outside without another word. Once around the corner, he paused in a pool of shadows and opened the box. Powder filled it to the very brim and it took all of Ash’s self-control not to bury his nose in it and inhale it all. Instead, he put the box deep in the folds of his coat and studied the opposite wall, considering his situation.

First, he’d managed to get the Council off his back which made his life much safer, while at the same time getting approved to heal. He finally had a viable income stream and the people he’d healed tonight would tell others… he should have a continuous flow of coins coming in.

Second, the Chromium gave him power like he’d never known. Surely not even the Faceless Monks would be able to stand against him if he had Chromium. He’d touched the sun! But he still needed to learn to control it… he’d nearly burnt himself to a cinder. That was easy, he’d just practice. As long as he had money he could keep buying Chromium and keep learning to control it.

But overriding the first two things were thoughts of Rae. How long did he dare spend learning control when she was probably sinking further into the Faceless Monks’ control? On the other hand, he couldn’t risk going in there again without knowing what he was up against. He had to find the source of the Monks’ power. Professor Yarrow knew, he was sure of that, but the bastard refused to tell him.
