Chapter Nine
As they strode toward the church, Amelia felt a little overwhelmed.
She didnât know anyone here.
Samuel squeezed her hand. She didnât think anyone could ever understand her so completely, but he did.
The preacher stood at the door greeting the parishioners as they entered. âGood morning Mrs Thomas,â he said cheerfully, in total contrast to the way heâd treated her on their wedding day.
âGood morning, Preacher,â she answered. Her husband squeezed her hand, then led her to a pew at the back of the little church where theyâd married almost a week earlier.
A parishioner had relieved her of the biscuits sheâd made for luncheon, as they entered.
As she sat, the organist began to play her most favorite song â Onward Christian Soldiers.
It was also her motherâs favorite, and it brought a lump to her throat.
âGood morning, Mrs Thomas,â said an older woman sitting next to her. âIâm Bertha Grogan, the doctorâs wife.â
It helped take her mind off the people sheâd lost.
So far, everyone in this tiny town of Dayton Falls had been everything sheâd hoped.
Amelia reached for the bible sitting at the back of the pew, holding it for solace.
As if she understood completely, Mrs Grogan reached over and patted her hand. It was comforting.
Her uncle had refused to allow Amelia to attend church after her parents had died, except for their funeral. And that was only because of appearances. What would people say if he didnât allow her to attend her own parents funeral?
Knowing what she knew now, was it any wonder he didnât attend church? The devil himself wouldnât dare to step inside such a sacred place.
It wasnât long before they stood for the first of several hymns, and Amelia was beginning to feel at ease.
When the service was over, several women from the auxiliary greeted her, taking her in hand.
âIâm Allie, this is Charlotte, Mrs Jensen, Mrs Green, and Mrs Jackson,â she was told. âYouâve already met Mrs Grogan.â
She was hugged by several of the women, especially the younger ones, and taken to the large kitchen.
âIâm never going to remember everyoneâs names,â she said, but was told not to worry.
The church sheâd attended in Westlake was nothing like this. It had a large attendance base, but was not as friendly as this small church.
She smiled at her husband as she spotted him across the room, talking to the Mercantile owner.
She could certainly get used to this lovely little town and itâs friendly people.

Amelia awoke wrapped up in Samuelâs arms. She was getting used to waking this way every day, and wasnât complaining.
It felt good to be wanted, and his warmth seeped through to her.
The bed was pretty good too.
He stirred. âGood morning, wife,â he said, grinning at her, then rolled away.
She felt empty, and didnât like the feeling at all. âGood morning.â
She tried to roll out of bed, but he snaked a hand around her. âI like it better when Iâm holding you,â he said. âBut I have to get ready for work.â
She liked it too, it felt nice.
