Enrico Costanza was waiting.

He was looking out of the window at the reddening sun. This evening, though, he could not savour the enchantment of its colours, the red and orange hues of the sunset. There was a veil of melancholy over his eyes. What bothered him most was that time was going by too quickly. He still had many things to do, all of them important. And he was anxious to know if his old friendships still held fast after all that had happened. He would soon be able to verify that personally.

When the telephone rang, he took a deep breath.

At last!

He walked to the desk and lifted the receiver.

‘Yes?’ he said in a firm tone.

‘It’s me,’ said the voice at the other end. ‘Any news?’

‘No.’

‘We have to follow this through. You know what I’m talking about … The people here need to be sure … ’

‘Yes.’

‘We need to know their moves. Do you understand me?’

‘Of course. We’ve already made arrangements. We’re being very careful.’

‘Good.’

They were careful not to speak more explicitly, even though they were sure their phones were not being tapped.

‘Thank you.’

‘Will I see you on my birthday?’ asked the voice at the other end.

‘Of course. I’ll be with you tomorrow night.’

When the call was over, he returned to the window and again looked outside. But the red ball of the sun had already sunk below the horizon. The colours of nature had disappeared and the mantle of darkness was gradually descending on the hills.

Costanza closed the shutters. He went back to the desk, lifted the receiver, and dialled a number.

It was a brief phone call, as cryptic as ever.
