Naomi twisted the key and opened the door to her new apartment. “Tada!” she exclaimed as she walked into the place.

“Looks kinda drab,” her brother remarked as he and Tre’Vell followed her in.

“Well, it does now because it’s unfurnished, silly! Once you guys finish bringing in all the stuff and I work a little magic of my own, it’ll look nice and spiffy,” Naomi said.

“If you say so,” said Derek.

Tre’Vell asked, “Where do you want us to put everything?”

Naomi answered, “I’m not sure yet. I’m still trying to picture in my head where everything is going to go.”

Derek reminded her, “You ain’t got long. The truck is sitting outside in the middle of the street.”

“Right. How about we just bring everything up here and just drop it off so we can move the truck? That way, we won’t be blocking traffic for that long.”

“Got it,” Tre’Vell said.

They exited the space and walked out the door to the street outside the apartment complex where their moving van was idling.

“It’s a good thing you on the first floor,” Derek said as he and Tre’Vell opened the back of the truck and hopped in it to start unloading Naomi’s belongings.

“I know, right?”

“We’ll take the bed up first,” Tre’Vell said. “The box spring and then the mattress.”

“You can put that in my room. I’ll grab the box with the sheets and stuff.”

Derek handed her the box before he and Tre’Vell moved to get the box spring.

“It’s a shame that Matt and Omar couldn’t be here to help you guys. It would’ve made this run a lot faster.”

“Yeah. Matt’s still wit’ his family for New Year’s,” Tre’Vell said.

“Where’d they go again?” she asked out of curiosity.

“Atlantic City.”

Derek added, “And Omar had a basketball game.”

“I know. He told me a couple days ago when I asked him what he was doing for New Year’s. He said he’d stop by after he came back to see my place. Maybe I’ll get him to help me arrange my furniture…”

As he and Tre’Vell got off the truck with the box spring, Derek muttered, “That better be all he gonna do over here.”

“What was that?” Naomi asked him.

“Nothing.”

A man came up behind them. “Excuse me!”

“Yeah? Oh, hi, Mr. Tanaka,” Naomi said, greeting her new landlord.

“Hello, Ms. James. Moving in, I see.”

“Sure am. And call me Naomi.”

“All right. Is this your truck?”

“Yep. I got my brother and his friend to help me move in.”

Mr. Tanaka looked over to the two of them. “Hello.”

“Hello,” they said.

“I just wanted to catch you to tell you that the protocol is that you can’t leave the truck here unattended. One of you has to be with it at all times,” Mr. Tanaka informed them.

“Drat! Okay. Thanks for letting us know that, Mr. Tanaka.”

“You’re quite welcome, Naomi.” Mr. Tanaka walked off into the building.

Derek said, “You got so lucky.”

“Nonsense. Just carry up the bed, dressers, table, chairs, andfuton and I’ll stay out here while you guys do that. I can take the boxes up myself. The ones I can carry, anyway,” Naomi ordered.
