Back at the house, Maria was waiting for us with open arms. She was dressed in a red dress that made her look ten years younger. The maid outfit she wore on a daily basis did nothing to show off her girlish figure. Even I was set aback as I opened the doors for Jules and Elizabeth, and found Maria standing in the middle of the foyer with her arms outstretched, beckoning a welcome embrace.

“What do you think?” she said. “Bonito, si?”

I was speechless. Apparently, my lack of a witty comeback brought everyone’s attention to me instead of Maria. I could feel their eyes on the back of my head.

Lizzy was the first to break the silence by running into Maria’s outstretched arms. “You look pretty! Like a movie star!” she said.

I cleared my thought. “You do look amazing, Maria. We should change your uniform to something like this instead of that frumpy maid outfit.”

Maria laughed. “Oh no! Do you know how long it took me to squeeze into this thing? I would miss breakfast every day.” She patted Lizzy on the head and took her hand. “Come, come. Let’s get you dressed too.”

“Can I look pretty like you?” Lizzy asked.

“I have a different dress in mind for you, mi amore.”

As we watched the two walk away, Jules elbowed me in the ribs. “No snappy comeback?” she said. “What’s up with you? Smitten?”

I laughed loudly – and unconvincingly. “No. Maria is like an annoying little sister. I don’t see her that way. But…” My voice faded and reappeared in a slight whisper. I looked around to make sure that no one was meandering about. “Have you seen a picture of Maria’s sister?”

“The one that’s supposed to come visit next week? Yeah.” Jules cocked an eyebrow. “You like?”

I gritted my teeth. Jules could be so crass when she wanted to. “Don’t put it like that. I’m not in high school.”

“Then why are we whispering?” She smirked at me, which cracked my face.

I cleared my throat again. “I just wanted to convey that I find her attractive and I believe that we may have some wonderful things in common.”

“How very gentlemanly of you, good sir,” Jules said in a mocking tone.

I huffed and walked toward the kitchen. “We’re leaving in twenty minutes. Make sure you’re ready.”

Seriously. I’m not quite sure how I’ve survived this house for so long…
