Chapter Five

Gerald walks to the little adjoining kitchen and returns with a bottle of Seagram’s 7 Canadian bourbon. He takes a hard swig and then holds the bottle out for me. There’s nothing I can do with my arms bound and mouth taped, but I don’t want any of the booze.

He drinks enough for two anyway.

“You and that Jonathan Mathers, the two of you, you make me sick! Did you even ever show him my script? He told you to read it, might as well have spat right in my face! Unless you never showed it to him. Was he even aware that I came by at all?”

I want to explain, and to say a lot of other things, but I wouldn’t even if I could. Any of my words will be wasted on him, and they’ll probably only incite him to greater violence.

“Either way,” Gerald says. “He’s either weak or a lying prick, but I’m not impressed either way. He’s a long way away from Summer Moon, I can tell you that.” I can only glare at him with all the contempt I can’t hide. “Well, I may never have my Summer Moon. I’ll never have his big house or all that money; I get that. I … I think I always understood that.”

A long, sad silence goes by as he dips his head, rubbing his eyes with his thumb and fingers.

“Well, fuck him, fuck both of you!” A little smile turns on his face. “Well, him more metaphorically, but you …”

I try to get free again, the chair shifting beneath me.

“Oh stop it,” he says, taking another long pull on the bottle. “Unless … you’re just sort of … enjoying yourself. Hmmmm? Is that it? Now that you’re all tied up, maybe it’s … turning you on, just a bit?”

I look away in anger.

“You lying bitch! I know how it is; I studied psychology in college … psychology, that’s another big joke. But it ain’t wrong, unlike everything in this shit hole town.” He takes another drink of the bourbon. It’s dark outside, and I don’t know how long I’d been knocked out. I don’t know how much he’s been drinking, or how close we both are to something more drastic and more violent.

If he’s drunk, I tell myself, I can use that against him. He’ll be clumsy, reckless, stupid. But he might also be angry, driven by passion and Lord knows what else.

“Psychology,” he repeats, words already slurred, “that’s how people think, why they do the things they do. That’s what stories are supposed to be about: real people facing real problems, not … superheroes or dinosaurs or whatever the hell. Psychology, that’s the shit. And psychology tells me that men and women, it’s all primal, it’s all …. alpha male, dominant, submissive female; it’s all natural, hardwired into us, y’see? Men are meant to be dominant, that’s nature, that’s Darwin. So women, they want to be submissive to the dominant male; that’s just psychology. So you can wriggle around in that chair all you want; you ain’t impressing me.
