CHAPTER 7

"I hope that wasn't too painful," Ash said as we drove through the elegantly curved Serendipity Bend streets. "I know my family can be overbearing sometimes. Especially my mother."

"There are a lot of them." I wasn't touching the comment about his mother. Her parting words were still ringing in my ears—do not hurt my son. "Everyone was very nice."

Ash tapped his knee and stared out the window. A large expanse of black leather seat separated us. Too large. After making love to him the other night, it seemed wrong not to have some intimacy. Silence opened up like a sink hole, threatening to pull us into it.

Rescue came in the form of the driver's voice crackling through the speaker. "Sir, one of the photographers is following us. What do you want me to do?"

Ash looked out the rear window. "Damn." He turned to me. "There's only one, but he'll find out where you live and I don't think it's a good idea for him to know. He'll never leave you alone."

I sucked on my lower lip. If the photographer found out that Dad once worked for Kavanagh Corporation he could dig up all sorts of things. Things I wanted to keep buried.

Ash's hand covered mine on the seat between us. His warmth seeped through my skin, reassuring. "Want to go for a drive instead?"

I nodded.

He pressed a button on the center console. "Drive around until he gets bored."

The car sped up, but after ten minutes, the photographer was still following. We filled the void with small talk about the wedding and his family. He spoke about his brothers with enthusiasm and love, even wild Damon, and I envied them, despite my conviction not to let him get under my skin. Ash had a good heart and I knew he would do anything for his family. It made a mockery of the relationship I had with my father. He was my only family and yet we bickered and pushed one another to the edge sometimes.

The Kavanaghs were nothing like I'd expected. Not the brothers anyway. Ellen was more how I envisioned them all, perfect down to her pinky fingernail and brusquely aloof. I had hardly spoken to Harry, but according to Dad, he was coldly efficient when it came to work.

"Do you think Zac will keep dating Zoe?" I asked, idly. I found his younger brother interesting, with his easygoing charm and prickly girlfriend. They didn't match at all and I began to hope he'd find someone else.

"Why?" Ash snapped.

I frowned at him. "Just wondering. He's so nice and she's…distant."

I could just make out his scowl in the light coming through the window. "I didn't realize you liked him."

"What's not to like? He's friendly and easy to talk to."

"Yeah," he said quietly. "So they tell me."

"Who does?"

"Everyone. His girlfriends."

"Does he have a lot of them?"

"Looking to add yourself to their number?" He spoke casually, but there was underlying bitterness there as if perhaps a past girlfriend had switched allegiance to the younger, more charming brother.
