Chapter 4

I’m Just A Sucker For Your Love

I heard a loud banging noise coming from my bathroom. I wondered why the plumber was there. I didn’t remember calling him. As the banging got louder, I opened my eyes and realized that I’d been asleep. I looked around and saw that I wasn’t at home. And then it dawned on me, I was still in my hotel room in Cancun. I glanced at the clock and saw that I’d only been asleep for about 50 minutes, but it felt more like hours. As the banging persisted, I realized that someone was at the door. I jumped up and ran over to it, hoping that nothing had gone wrong in advance of the shoot.

When I looked through the peephole, I saw that it was Ken. I swung the door open alarmingly. “Is everything okay?” I asked anxiously.

“No. It’s not,” he said, brushing past me and into my room.

I closed the door and walked over to him slowly. If something had gone wrong with my campaign, I didn’t know what I would do. I did not have the strength to take yet another blow.

Ken sat down on the couch, and I went and sat next to him, bracing myself for the worst. “What happened?” I asked dismally.

Ken didn’t speak at first. He was just staring straight ahead at nothing in particular with a disgusted look on his face. What could have gone awry? Were we over budget already? Did Azalea’s people call and cancel on us? “Ken, talk to me!” I insisted. “What happened?”

“What was Rick doing in your room tonight?”

I sat there, completely confused. Ken’s words didn’t even register at first because they were the last thing I’d expected to hear. I was waiting to hear something negative about the shoot. So this totally threw me for a loop. “I’m sorry…what?”

Ken turned to me, his eyes bloodshot red. “I said, what was Rick doing in your room tonight?”

I held my hand to my chest and exhaled, so relieved that nothing had gone wrong. But then, I got irritated by Ken’s question. “What are you doing, watching me?” I asked.

“No, I’m not watching you. My room is right down the hall. I saw him coming out of here.”

“Ken, I already told you that Rick and I have a close working relationship. We were discussing the shoot over dinner. Not that it’s any of your concern.” I failed to mention how Rick had consoled me and confessed his feelings for me. Because that too was none of his concern.

“That’s bullshit, Lisa. Rick has been after you ever since the day you started. And you’ve just been eating it up.”

“Ken, it’s late, and I’ve got a big day tomorrow. So if you don’t mind,” I said, getting up and walking over to the door, “I need to get some sleep.”

“Why have you been crying?” he asked, following me to the door.

“Come again?” I shot back, surprised that he was able to notice.

“I said, why have you been crying?”

“I haven’t been,” I lied, opening the door.
