I Can’t Believe I Slept With My Boss…Again

I arrived at work bright and early on Monday morning, excited to start my day. Aside from my encounter with Ken over the weekend, I really focused on learning as much about Giovanni Cosmetics as I possibly could and brainstorming new ad campaign ideas to present to Jacob.

While I didn’t quite know what the future held for Ken and me, or what we were doing at all for that matter, I did know that I would keep things strictly professional in the office and not expect any sort of preferential treatment. All I wanted was to come in, do an outstanding job and make my mark, which would help catapult me to the next level of opening my own business.

I walked through the marketing department and into my office to put away my things, then went into the kitchen to pour myself a cup of coffee. Two of the marketing coordinators, Alisa and Katie, were sitting at a table speaking in hushed tones. Both of the young women, who’d graduated from college a couple of years ago, turned around when they saw me walk in, spoke to me warmly and asked about my weekend. We exchanged a few pleasantries, and I headed toward the coffee pot while they continued their conversation.

“So he never called you afterwards?” I heard Alisa ask.

“No, and we did everything. I mean…everything.”

“Wow, I can’t believe him. I’m so sorry. I guess he really has earned his reputation.”

“Definitely,” Katie agreed, now sounding as though she was in tears. “He just had me convinced that he felt something real for me. Now I feel so stupid.”

“Don’t!” Alisa insisted. “How were you supposed to know he was a predator?”

“I know…I’m just ready to give up on men altogether.”

After I finished pouring cream and sugar in my coffee, I struggled not to give Katie some words of encouragement since she wasn’t talking to me. But then, just as I turned around to walk out of the kitchen, I heard Alisa say, “Don’t let Ken ruin your chances of meeting a great guy. He’s just one asshole out of so many good men. You just have to find the right one.”

When I heard those words, a sick feeling of dread hit me in the gut like a ton of bricks, then spread throughout my entire body. I suddenly felt weak and numb, almost dropping my coffee mug. I had to force myself not to hyperventilate as I slowly counted to ten and walked out of the kitchen.

“Have a great first day!” Alisa called out behind me.

“Thanks,” I barely managed.

I walked to my office and closed the door behind me, then slumped down so low in my chair that I almost slid to the floor. What have I done? I kept asking myself over and over again. How did I manage to let this man dupe me? Twice! Who was Ken Giovanni, really, and why was he such a womanizer? What was the point
