Chapter 4

A Fairytale Turned Nightmare

After that night together, David and I became inseparable, just like we were back in college. He flew back to Miami briefly to pack up his things, then moved in with me, into the condo that I’d originally purchased for the both of us. My parents were not thrilled that David and I were back together, and neither were my friends; especially Janice. But I was in love and felt that things had ended up exactly the way they were supposed to, just with a slight detour along the way.

Even though my parents were not that happy about David and me reuniting, they respected my decision and kept their promise to give him a job in Simone Cosmetics’ facilities department. So there I was, finally living my intended dream. I had my man, my wonderful job, and my beautiful home. David’s transition from the NBA to Simone Cosmetics was a seamless one. Everybody loved his outgoing personality and celebrity athlete status, especially the guys he worked with in facilities. I finally felt fulfilled, and things could not have been better.

But within a couple of months, things did get better. It was a Tuesday afternoon, and everyone was winding down around the office. I headed to the conference room for a company briefing. When I walked in, the room was packed, and my extended family and David’s entire family were there. I was so confused. And then, it dawned on me what was happening. David approached me out of the crowd, got down on one knee, and proposed in front of everyone with a beautiful five carat cushion princess cut solitaire. It was exactly what I’d wanted, and he was exactly who I wanted. I could see my mother, leaning on my father a bit with tears streaming down her face. I couldn’t tell if they were tears of joy or sorrow. But at that moment, I wasn’t worried about it. Because what mattered most was that the tears streaming down my face were definitely tears of joy.

It didn’t take long for me to start planning our wedding. David and I were married that next summer at my parents’ country club. It was the most beautiful, enchanting wedding I’d ever witnessed. My colors were pale peach and cream, and my signature flowers were roses and lilies. My dress was long, traditional and perfect, and David never looked so handsome in his tuxedo. Our whimsical wedding went off without a hitch. During the reception, my mother even pulled me to the side and told me that since David had come back into my life, he had truly shown her a different side of himself, and she was prepared to accept him as her son. Those words brought me to tears, and I could not have been happier.

As soon as we returned from our honeymoon in Fiji, David started mentioning wanting to start a family. At first it was a casual, occasional conversation. Then it became a regular subject and goal.
