Chapter 16

When we arrived at Seth’s cabin the next morning with Tom Piper, it was evident to all of us that we’d made the right decision by leaving. The front door had been ripped off its hinges and lay on the deck.

The contents of Seth’s house were strewn about the front yard, many of them shredded beyond recognition. For a full minute Seth could only sit in the cab of his truck, staring at the devastation.

I reached over at some point and took his hand, giving it a comforting squeeze. This seemed to snap him out of his stupor. He turned his gaze to me and blinked several times.

“Do you want to go in and see what’s left?” I asked gently.

He sighed, then nodded. “Might as well.”

We let Tom take the lead as we carefully stepped around the pages of books, shards of smashed dishes, and scraps of clothing that littered the front yard and deck. He motioned for us to stay outside while he went into the house, gun drawn, to check for anyone—or anything—that still might be on the premises.

I gasped when I entered the cabin. Tom hadn’t been kidding about the intruder being thorough. All of the cabinets in the kitchen had been emptied, the contents smashed on the floor or against the wall.

The dining room table and chairs were broken apart and lay in pieces, good for nothing now but kindling. The living room furniture had been shredded, the stuffing tossed about. When we went into the bedroom, the bed was in similar shape, and all of Seth’s clothes had been ripped to shreds. Curiously, mine were all carefully hanging in the closet, my shoes lined up on the floor right where we’d set them when we unpacked.

I peeked into the bathroom and saw it, too, had been destroyed.

The mirror over the sink had been shattered, creating a surreal fun-house image of my reflection as I stepped inside, my boots crunching on the shards of broken glass that littered the floor. Thankfully, the creatures hadn’t torn out the plumbing to add a flood to the other destruction.

My heart breaking for what Seth must’ve been feeling at seeing his home so violated, I bent and picked up the
