The following morning, after a restless sleep where Jacobs was often tossing and turning, he was at the pawn shop not too long after Franks opened the place. Usually he opened around nine, but today was one of those days he had a tough time dragging himself in to open the building, not getting there until after ten. Jacobs was already waiting for him in the alley when he got there.
âHow long you been waiting?â Franks asked.
âHalf hour or so. Donât you ever open this place on time?â
Franks laughed. âNot really. Whatâs the point? Not like I got a line of customers waiting to break down the door or something.â
âFair enough.â
âWhy? Whatâs the matter?â
âWhat makes you think somethingâs the matter?â
âBecause youâre here waiting for me,â Franks said. âThat always means somethingâs up. Always.â
Once Franks opened the door, Jacobs followed him inside as the owner got the building ready for the dayâs business. Franks unlocked the front door, got the register ready, did a few things in the office, all with Jacobs on his tail. When Franks was finally finished doing everything he needed to open, he sat down on a stool behind the counter. He watched Jacobs for a few minutes as he paced around the store, looking down the whole time. There was no doubt something was on his friendâs mind. The pacing always gave it away. It always meant there was a serious subject he was doing some heavy thinking about.
âYou wanna tell me whatâs going on?â
âSomethingâs not right,â Jacobs replied. âSomethingâs not right.â
âYou wanna elaborate on that?â
âSomethingâs not right. Somethingâs not right. I know it. I feel it. I just canât put my finger on it.â
Franks looked up at the ceiling and rolled his eyes, recognizing the mood his friend was in. Heâd seen it several times before. He was in one of those moods where he was thinking and talking about something, but not really hearing what other people were saying. He would just keep on repeating the same thing, like something was stuck in his head.
âSo, what happened with your lady friend last night?â Franks asked. âGet what you needed?â
âI feel like Iâm almost there. I just canât seem to get the final piece.â
âWell, as long as youâre paying attention to me, how âbout some breakfast?â
âIâm missing something.â
âYeah, breakfast.â
âNo, at the house, something happened, and I should be recognizing it.â
âMight just be your stomach thatâs growling,â Franks said, seeming as if he was having fun at his friendâs expense.
âSomething should have been there, but wasnât. Or maybe something shouldnât have been there, but was.â
Franks got a confused look on his face, not having a clue what he was saying. âMan, is that how I sound most of the time? âCause that donât make a lick of sense.â
After a few more minutes of pacing and talking, Jacobs finally sat down, pulling up another stool on the other side of the counter. It seemed like he was starting to relax and recognize his surroundings. Franks just looked at him and smiled.
