CHAPTER 38

Something was going on. Molly wasn’t sure what. Jake hadn’t come home last night, which wasn’t necessarily a cause for concern. Her mom, though, seemed to be on edge. She wasn’t worried about Jake not coming home the same way some people would worry, as if he were cheating on her mom. Jake was a stand-up guy, and he loved her mom beyond reason.

No, it was something else.

Yoni, of course, was at the house. Her brothers had gone to bed. But Molly had been unable to sleep. She headed downstairs, hoping that maybe a quick snack or maybe reading a or two of the book she’d put down a few hours ago might lull her into a sleeping kind of mood.

As she reached the bottom step, Yoni stepped out of the guest room as soon. “Everything okay?” He asked.

“Yeah, I just couldn’t sleep.”

“I know just the remedy for that. A nice glass of warm milk.” He headed down the hall before Molly could say anything.

She cringed at his back. She knew Yoni’s heart was in the right place, but she really hated warm milk.

Yoni’s phone beeped as he stepped into the kitchen, and he pulled it out, reading the message with his brow furrowed.

“What’s going on?” She asked as she followed him into the kitchen.

The frown still on his face, Yoni looked up. “It’s Jake. He says you need to go down to Dom’s shelter if you’re up.”

Molly shrugged, heading back to the stairs. “Well, I’m up.”

And then her thoughts became a little more concerned. What if something had happened to Dom? What if the person who attacked the estate had returned? She hurried up the stairs, her mind conjuring up one horrible scenario after the next. But as she sat down on the edge of the bed to pull on socks, common sense prevailed. If it were a real emergency, Jake wouldn’t have phrased it that way. He would have told Yoni to drag her down to the bomb shelter if necessary. Or security would have simply come for her.

But that didn’t keep the tremor out of her hands.

Chucking her sweatshirt over her head as she hurried down the stairs, she threw on her sneakers that sat near the door.

Yoni was already waiting for her. He put up his hand, stopping her as she reached for the door. “Hey, hey, I’m sure nothing’s wrong. If it was, Jake’s message would have been a little more urgent. He just said if you were up, you should come over. So don’t go thinking worst-case scenario until you need to, okay?”

Molly took a breath, knowing Yoni was right. But it was hard not to go straight to worst-case scenario. Dom, he was a fragile soul. And right now, the two of them were both kind of in a similar place. He was her partner in psychosis. And she counted on him the way he counted on her.

But she pulled her fears back, knowing that it wouldn’t help anything. “Okay. I’m ready.”

Zaria strolled down the stairs and leaned into Molly.
