CHAPTER ELEVEN

Robin paced around her office, news on in the background, trying not to panic. She had woken up to find the anonymous video playing over and over again on the news, the story about the train explosion revived even though it had faded as news stories always did after the next big disaster. Now that an anonymous source had sent the video out and made it clear that the train explosion was no accident, there were fresh eyes on the accident.

The video of Jake and Leah played on the television screen again, and like a train wreck, Robin couldn’t tear her eyes away. She saw them there, on the cell phone video, kissing each other at the car and laughing. Her blood boiled at the sight of them. She had sent them to kill each other, not to fall in love. But anyone with half a brain could see that falling in love was exactly what had happened.

And then there was her backup agent. Robin had worried that Jake would kill Leah before she managed to poison him, but Leah was good at what she did, and Robin truly believed that Leah would get it right, and then the man who shot her on the train would die of a heart attack before the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were able to do much more than cuff him up. When the autopsy revealed that he was a Werebear, the public’s mind would have been made up instantly. They would have seen him as a vicious killer, a rogue that had gone off the deep end and taken things into his own hands. It would be an open and shut case.

At least, it should have been. Even knowing that she had sent her best two agents to take each other out, she had sent a third agent that was only there in case something went wrong. Sending him with a bomb to leave on the train had been a last-minute decision, and when the agent had received the bomb from a special courier, he had no idea that the bomb was set so that Robin could detonate it by sending a specific message to his phone. He had been carrying his own death and hadn’t known.

If he would have been competent, this wouldn’t have happened, she seethed, blaming the man for his own demise, even though she had sent him in outmatched and outnumbered. If their roles were reversed and she had done the same with Leah or Jake, pitting the single agent against two others, both Leah and Jake would have come out victorious. But Leah and Jake were special, and she had known that when she sent them to do her dirty work in the first place.

Until Helen had called, Robin had been quite certain that Jake and Leah had perished with the train, or while jumping from the train. But she hadn’t taken into account that a tour train would be running at thirty miles an hour and she had forgotten about the fresh layer of snow that had fallen.
