Chapter 8: Scott

Lisa’s hand touched Scott’s paw. His body shouted at him to take her. He shifted back into his human form and she continued looking at him hungrily. She felt like he did, they both knew it.

She’s the one.

“Lisa,” he began, but he trailed off. How was he supposed to say that his instincts knew that she was the right woman for him? How could he say that she’d find true happiness if she left her whole life behind and married a man she’d known for a few hours?

“Yes, Scott?” Her voice had acquired a higher-pitched ring. She was nervous and expected something important. It was almost as if she could get into his head and know what he was thinking. That woman was amazing.

“I think… we could… I’d like…” Damn it. It used to be easier before. He’d flirted with hundreds of girls back when he was a cub, and now he couldn’t even find the words! What the hell was wrong with him?

Adrian entered the kitchen and looked around at the mess Scott had made. Cocoa powder on the floor, a dirty pot on a counter, and all the ingredients he’d used were out of their places. His expression hardened and he looked at Scott through annoyed eyes. He knew what had happened, and he didn’t like it. Even though he’d accepted Amy, Scott’s brother wasn’t going to accept Lisa easily. That man needed to find a hobby and to stop annoying the people around him.

Krissy, the receptionist they had downstairs, trailed after Adrian. She looked around the room and wrinkled her nose in disapproval. She was fairly tall, blonde and slim, but she wasn’t attractive because she had a permanent constipated expression that always made Scott want to avoid her.

“Here you are,” Adrian said in what he probably considered a friendly voice. He sounded tense, he sounded fake, and he didn’t fool Scott. Judging by Lisa’s impassivity, he didn’t fool her either. Adrian walked closer to them. “We’ve been trying to come here to do the introductions properly.” He stretched out his hand so that Lisa shook it and he introduced himself and Krissy.

Krissy looked at Scott hungrily and walked too close to him with a broad and hungry smile on her face.

Not again.

Back when they’d hired Krissy a few years ago, she’d been very interested in catching one of the Weston brothers for herself. She’d been nice to Cage and Adrian, but her favorite had always been Scott. She’d followed him around the factory, bumped onto him on purpose, and she’d always seconded his opinions in order to seem more similar to him.

He’d dated her a couple of times because back then he’d been an immature idiot who dated any available girl, but it hadn’t gone well. They’d tried again shortly before Cage’s wedding, but they’d broken up very quickly. She hadn’t been his true mate and he’d known it immediately, but she’d become clingy and obsessed that she’d eventually become his mate. Women didn’t shape into mates, either they were or they weren’t.
