Chapter Twenty

The tavern was busy for seven that evening. The dance floor, in particular, was crowded with good old country boys and girls in cowboy hats and boots line dancing to the exceptional bluegrass band. The tavern was always crowded on nights when live bands performed. It gave local bands a chance to practice their talents in front of a live audience and have their moment in the spotlight. Jess and Drake played pool in the back of the crowded tavern. While Jess made her shot, Drake performed classic Michael Jackson dance moves to the country music. He was actually quite good. Jess straightened and watched as he grabbed his crotch with a high-pitched yowl. Jess shook her head and laughed at his behavior. She didn’t know how she could ever live without him in her life--or why she would ever want to.

“I hope Ivy appreciates you.”

“I’m good for a laugh or two. She’s not nearly as fond of my “Flashdance”.” His look suddenly turned serious. “I can’t understand why.”

Jess was slightly horrified at the thought and stared at him. “Please, not here. These good old boys think you’re weird as it is.”

Despite her comment, Jess was trying to picture Drake doing some of those risqué dance moves. She actually wanted to see that.

“You’re in a good mood tonight. You and Ridley sneak one in on the kitchen counter?” he teased while cleverly raising his brows.

Jess glared her disapproval. “That’s just plain nasty, Drake.”

Drake casually leaned on his pool stick and maintained his serious look, although he was rarely serious.

“So what’s the deal? I walk out the door and it’s wild kingdom with you two?”

“Nothing happened,” she insisted and observed the pool table for her next shot. “I was a little drunk and crawled into his bed. He makes me feel safe.”

“He’d make the Marine’s feel safe,” Drake muttered. “I thought you’d gotten over him.”

Jess sat on the edge of the pool table, twirled the pool stick between her fingers with style and precision as Emry had on the ship, and sighed softly.

“No, I just kept it to myself. Being Ridley is, well, Ridley--”

“More or less,” Drake muttered.

“He’s been very strict about the “no sex” thing, but he made me a deal tonight--well, more like a wager. If I kiss Sheriff Stone and don’t fall hopelessly in love with him, he’ll reconsider our relationship.”

“Huh? And it only took six months of begging,” Drake teased then grinned lustfully. “Sheriff Stone would have had you bent over the pool table at “would you”.”

“That’s--graphic,” she remarked with a disapproving look. Jess turned serious and appeared deep in thought. “I have to handle Sheriff Stone carefully. I wouldn’t want to encourage him. He has enough ideas on his own.”

“You could always play pool for it. If you lose, you have to kiss the winner. That way he can’t think it means anything more.”

“That’s pretty ingenious. I guess some of my devious nature has finally rubbed off on you.”

“I don’t need your help to be devious,” Drake gloated with a sly smile.
