Chapter 33

OLIVE

TWO MONTHS LATER

I hadn’t met up with the detectives a week later. Or two weeks later. Or even two months later.

I’d called several times and they had told me that Becca Poe was not considered a suspect.

They told me there was no evidence that she had ever been in Los Angeles. No house owned, apartment rented, or hotel room checked out around the time of the robbery by someone named Becca Poe who was between twenty and forty years old.

They had contacted Becca’s parents, but they had no idea where their daughter had taken off to. As far as they knew, their daughter had never spent any time in Los Angeles.

More and more murders had taken place across LA in the intervening months. While the Pacific Palisades murders garnered a lot of attention early on, I hadn’t seen anything in the news in weeks. It had drifted from the public consciousness.

On the rare occasions I talked to the detectives, they’d tell me the case was still theoretically open, but they had more pressing needs. The last time I had called, Detective Washington asked nicely if I could give the calls a break.

It was over. At least in the eyes of the LAPD.

I had to go a different route.
