Chapter Six

Christmas was quickly approaching, and it was time to prepare.

Allie made a list of the items she would need for her Christmas baking. She needed an assortment of raisins, sultanas, currants and prunes, as well as a variety of spices, flour and other necessities.

There were none of the required items in the pantry, so she’d need to go to the Mercantile.

Mr Horvard would be rubbing his hands together when he saw her large list. He might even need to order some items in. But perhaps not, as the other women in town would surely be preparing for their Christmas baking too.

As she entered the store, Mr Horvard’s face lit up. Not because it was her per se, she was certain, but because he was certain of another sale.

“Good Morning Mrs Jones. How can I help you on this chilly December day?”

Allie pulled her coat tighter around herself. It seemed quite ridiculous to wear her coat when she was literally crossing the road, but it was always cold in the Mercantile.

“Good day to you too, Mr Horvard,” she said. “I have a list of items I need for my Christmas baking.”

He grinned. “Ah yes, Christmas. I’m very much behind in putting up my decorations this year.” He took her list and looked it over. “I have most of these items, but a few are on order and should arrive in a few days.

“That’s fine, thank you very much.”

“I’ll gather up the items I have in stock and get the Peters boy to bring them over later. They’ll be far too heavy for you to carry.”

She had no idea what he meant. “The Peters boy?”

He frowned at her. “Young Tommy Peters. He does my deliveries after school. So if you can wait that long, he’ll bring them over later today. No charge of course.”

“That sounds wonderful, thank you Mr Horvard. In fact, I need some rum, which I presume you don’t stock, so I’ll wander down to the hotel to purchase some.”

Mr Horvard looked worried. “Indeed we don’t, Mrs Jones, but I would advise against going to the hotel alone. It is not safe for a lady such as yourself.”

Allie laughed at the suggestion. Not safe? It was at the end of the road – only a half a dozen or so shops down the road in fact. “I promise you Mr Horvard, I will be perfectly safe.” After all, what could happen in broad daylight?

“Oh, and I almost forgot. Charlie gave me the money to settle our account.” She handed over a wad of cash and turned to leave.

“Do wait for a receipt,” the store owner said. “That’s a lot of money, and I don’t want to be accused of stealing.”

“Fair enough.” Allie waited for the receipt, then headed out the door where she thought about Mr Horvard’s warning about the hotel. She shook her head, that couldn’t possibly be right.

Besides, most of the patrons were there at night.

She pulled her thick coat around her a little tighter. Mr Horvard was right – it was chilly today.
