19. An Appointment And An Agreement

Doctor Graves smiled at Giles and Moira. He shook Giles’s hand. “Nice to see you again Giles.”

“Likewise,” said Giles, thinking it was anything but. Not in those circumstances.

“Can I get either of you a coffee?”

“You can get to the point, Doctor,” said an impatient Moira.

Graves held up his palms in a calming gesture. “I know it’s hard.”

“Do you?” said Giles bitterly.

Graves took a deep breath and rubbed the bridge of his nose, wishing he was out golfing, anywhere but this office right now.

“You’ve had a couple of weeks to think things over. Have you come to a decision about treatment?”

“Yes, Doctor, we have.”

In the first gesture of solidarity they’d shown for a while, they held hands and looked at each other sadly.

“We’re going to try a first course of treatment and see how he copes with it. If we feel it’s the wrong decision we’ll discontinue it.”

Graves looked relieved. “I’m pleased you’ve decided to try it.” He consulted his on-screen diary. “Now, I see we have Jake scheduled for a scan tomorrow so, all being well, we could start the first course of chemo next Monday. Is that OK?”

“Yes, alright,” said Giles, stiffly.

Outside in the car Moira was wiping away the last of the tears. “We are doing the right thing, aren’t we, Giles?”

He rubbed her hand and tried to smile. “I believe we are.”

“You know that tramp?”

“Sextus?”

“What?”

“I mean erm … Frank.”

Moira looked at him oddly.

“What about him, hun?”

“Will you speak to him? Maybe see if he …”

“What harm can it do, provided we don’t let on to Jake what we are trying?”

“OK. But promise me you’ll do it when I’m out of the house.”

“Of course. I promise. I’ll speak to Frank tonight.”

Moira gave a tiny smile. “Giles?”

“Yes, hun?”

“Who the bloody hell is ‘Sextus’?”
