After a somewhat fruitless evening and the following morning—most of which was spent arguing about Dr. Melrose and being ghosted by potential interviewees—Heather had been dragged along for an evening drive with Gene. The old man’s tour of the town consumed the first half of the journey. The post office, bar, diner, library, and famous trees were all on the list, and the car slowed to a crawl as he reeled off facts about each one.

Despite having lived in Glenville for three months, Heather politely pretended to be clueless, nodding along and wowing when appropriate. Though her responses became increasingly flat and disinterested, that didn’t deter Gene, and he continued his tales long past the point of leaving civilization.

“Where are we going?” she finally asked, realizing she hadn’t questioned his request for her to accompany him on a drive and knowing that its intention couldn’t be solely sightseeing.

“Did you find much during the interviews?” he asked, finally getting to the point but ignoring her question.

“Well, the parents definitely suspect Mason Fowler, and considering what the witnesses saw, I’d say he’s suspect number one.”

“One of the witnesses believes he drove off without her,” Gene added.

“Yeah, but he seemed... unreliable.”

“Grady? Really?” Gene asked, completely dumbfounded and staring at Heather in disbelief.

Heather kept her eyes on the road for him. “Yeah. He was gurning.”

“Gurning?” Gene questioned.

“It’s what people’s mouths do when they take uppers. Like cocaine or crack, for example.”

“Huh. You don’t say. Well, I’ll have to pay that boy a visit. Straighten him out a bit.”

Heather wanted to tell him not to do that but decided it was a pointless request. Gene was clearly going to do what Gene wanted to do. So instead, she continued. “I think the other line cook is more reliable. The one who said she did get in the car. He seems smart, attentive.”

Gene hummed and drummed the wheel. “What did the girls say? The friends?”

“They weren’t sure. They think Mason is misunderstood, I think, but it also seemed like they were protecting him.”

“Did they mention Thimbles at all?”

“They did. But I think they were joking.”

Gene looked grave. “Old Thimbles is no joking matter. That man is a menace. Killing livestock. Drunk and disorderly. Stalking. Unfortunately, none of his arrests seem to stick.”

“Is he strong?” Heather asked.

Gene knitted his brow into a silver caterpillar. “Why?”

“Well, it seems that Jenny was bludgeoned to death. Which means the killer would have had to be able to attack her and wield a heavy object.”

Gene nodded. “I meant to mention that. Despite your doubts, Dr. Melrose has already completed the autopsy, and you’ll be happy to know he agrees with you. The cause of death was blood loss caused by the blunt force wound at the back of the head.”

“Okay. Anything else?”

“The full report will be ready in a few weeks,” Gene assured Heather as if that timeline was in any way helpful.

“Surely there must be more from his preliminary findings?”

“Like what?”

“DNA under her nails, unusual bruising, signs of sexual assault,” Heather listed off.
