The speakerphone sat in the middle of the long library table, books and manuscripts stacked around it. Tara’s mother, Lynette Spencer, was on the other end of the line at the family’s home in Rock Hill, Missouri, talking so fast her words were barely intelligible. Pete’s face had gone white, and Tara’s sister Kelly clutched the edge of the table.

Tara leaned toward the phone. “Mom, slow down. Father Saur came to visit, you were in the kitchen, and then what? What happened?”

“It was just the two of us in the kitchen. I thought Fimi was safe, Tara, it never occurred to me she wasn’t safe. She was in the living room with Diedre and the other security guard.”

Diedre Hartman, a tall, muscular former bodybuilder and police officer, was the head of security from Willow Springs, a women’s community Tara had lived in briefly after Fimi’s birth. Diedre had volunteered to stay at the Spencers’ home to help watch over Fimi while Tara traveled overseas.

Tara’s heart rate spiked. “And where is she now? Where’s Fimi?” She stared at the glowing buttons on the phone. Everything else in the room had become hazy. Only the phone seemed real.

“She’s been taken. She’s gone,” Lynette said. “Someone wearing a ski mask, wearing all black, burst in and knocked Father Saur to the floor and shoved me into the pantry. I banged on the door and walls for nearly an hour, Tara, and I couldn’t get out. The cabinet had been slid across it. When Father Saur came to, he called the police and got me out, but that was over an hour later. He wrenched his back moving the cabinet. And Fimi was gone, she was already gone.”

“Gone,” Tara said.

“Your brothers and the security guard were all knocked out, maybe drugged the police said.”

“What about Diedre Hartman?” Pete sat rigid, hands flat on the long wooden library table. “Was she drugged too?”

“No. She’d disappeared,” Lynette said.

“So she took Fimi?” Pete said.

“Or someone took her and Fimi,” Lynette said. “But her SUV is gone.”

Tara paced in the small area between the table and the towering row of bookshelves behind it, scanning her memory for everything she remembered from the last time she’d spoken with Diedre. It had been at Willow Springs, and she’d encouraged Tara to move out of the community.

“Her mother was ill,” Tara said. “Dying. I think from some type of cancer.”

Twice since Fimi’s birth, seriously injured people had spontaneously healed in the baby’s presence. Diedre knew about at least one of the incidents. It had happened at Willow Springs. Tara let her breath out. If Diedre’s mother was truly dying, she might have taken Fimi in a desperate attempt to save her. Which meant she’d have no reason to harm the baby, and Tara might get her back safely.

“Do you know that for certain? It’s not just what she told people?” Sophia said. She’d been sitting quietly opposite Tara, the yellow legal pad she’d used while aiding in research earlier that day in front of her.
