Chapter 8
I woke up from a blissfully dreamless sleep. The sky was just starting to show the beautiful reds, oranges and pinks of sunrise. Since I planned on a lazy day at home, Iâd throw my robe over my pyjamas and call it good. I quickly run a brush through my hair, tied my hair back in a braid, and splashed some water on my face.
I was in no rush today, so I was going to make a good breakfast andâfor onceâactually sit and take the time to enjoy it.
I grabbed my cutting board and knife and placed them on the counter. Opening the fridge, I surveyed my options. Iâd make a veggie and cheese omelette and toast. I pulled the green onion, tomato and green pepper out of the crisper and placed them on the counter by the sink. After rinsing the vegetables, I diced them. It was so nice to be doing something normal, I thought as I finished my preparations and put the vegetables aside until I needed them.
Lighting the small burner that already had my egg pan sitting on it, I put a small amount of butter in the pan and watched as it melted. I cracked two eggs into a bowl, whipped them, and when I saw the butter start to sizzle, I added them to the frying pan. Almost forgetting the cheese, I grabbed it out of the fridge and cut a couple thin slices, placing them on top of the egg before topping it all off with the veggies.
My mundane breakfast-making activities felt like a meditation, I mused as I pushed the toast down in the toaster. I said a silent prayer and hoped it wasnât going to be another one of those days where reality was distorted with crazy shit that should only be seen on the science fiction channel. I needed some peace today.
As I ate I thought about what I would do to fill my day. I wasnât sure when my mother would be leaving today, so I didnât want to risk going over there. I would have to try to do that tomorrow. Perhaps I would head over there after I got off work in the afternoon. The neighbors would all still be at work, so my attempts to break into the house should go unnoticed. If I could get away with the break-in without being seen, Iâd be in the clear. I would have to take precautions not to be seen. I didnât want her neighbors mentioning to her that they had seen me at the house. Mother had made it clear, even if she had not come right out and said it, that she didnât want me there while she was gone.
As I brought my last piece of toast to my lips, I got a vision. My apartment vanished before my eyes, and instead I was looking into a room cast in shadow. I couldnât see much but I could see enoughâblood, lots of blood, a dagger that looked like it was made of black stone, and a figure or maybe two.
