Chief Lonnegan was seething. Media was pouring onto Reservoir Road— again. He had two officers on the way to the hospital again, and the town supervisor was apoplectic. “Wanda,” he barked, “tell me what the hell happened here!”

“Chief, Colletti got wounded but still safely unarmed this poor freaked-out kid. He somehow managed to keep himself and everyone else together. It was the bravest thing I’ve ever seen. I don’t know that I know how to write that in a report.” Burke’s voice trembled with emotion.

Lonnegan put his hand on her shoulder. “You write it just like you told me, Wanda. Just like that. We’re all okay. You did good work, and everyone’s going home tonight.”

The chief called headquarters. “Chavez, put out a request to have other departments send us officers who’ve been through deadly physical force situations. I want them talking to our officers. Call in all the brass, too. I want everyone backing each other up.”

“Yes sir.”

In law enforcement, silence could become a silent killer. Winston-on-Hudson had just had its first police shooting in over forty years. Lonnegan knew how important it was for everyone to talk about the incident and understand what could be learned from it.
