Unseen Forces

Ethan

"Why does the west warehouse inventory keep fluctuating, Bob?" My tone is sharper than I intended, but the confusion and frustration get the better of me.

Bob, staying calm, raises an eyebrow. "What do you mean? Inventory should be consistent."

I tap the report spread out on my desk. Numbers and data glare back at me. "Every week, the numbers are different. Items are listed as received, but they never show up."

His face clouds with concern. "Is it an entry error?"

"If it happened once, then sure. It’s happened repeatedly, though, and always from one specific warehouse." I try to reign in my growing impatience.

Bob rubs his temple before taking the reports and looking them over himself. "Have you approached David? He oversees that area."

I snort. "David claims ignorance, but the inconsistencies started around the same time he took over that department."

Bob leans back, sighing deeply. "It’s a serious allegation, Ethan. We can't just point fingers without concrete evidence."

I take the reports back and read them over for the millionth time. "I know, Bob. But something's off. I can’t shake the feeling there’s more to it."

Bob nods slowly. "All right. Let’s handle this discreetly. Dive deeper, get your evidence. But, Ethan, be careful." With those words of caution, he leaves the office. The door clicks shut behind him, and the shadows in the room seem darker, the atmosphere thicker.

I pull open a drawer in my office desk. My fingers run over old photos that are tokens of past victories and happier times.

Each time I’ve faced a challenge, I’ve met it head-on, but this is different. The ambiguity, the cloak-and-dagger games—it's like trying to catch a shadow. It’s a phantom that evades your grasp just when you think you've got it. I've faced corporate battles before, but this isn’t about business; it's about trust. Years of built relationships could be potentially crumbling under the weight of deceit. What if the rot runs deeper than I think? What if people I trust are involved? The very foundation of the company, the ethos on which it was built, could be at stake.

For now, I have something else I can do. Drawing in a deep breath, I reach out to the intercom, summoning her. This conversation is long overdue.

When Isa walks into my office, I motion for her to take a seat. "Isa," I begin, "how's your writing coming along?"

Her eyes flicker to meet mine for a brief moment before drifting away again. "It's going...all right," she replies in a tone that suggests anything but.

I study her a moment longer, noting the tired lines that etch her face and the slight tremor in her hand. I want to take her hands and steady them in my own, but I don’t. Instead of sitting across from her at the desk, I take another seat next to her. "You've always been there, supporting every decision, every move. And I need to say thank you for that."

She offers a small, distracted smile, but it's devoid of its usual warmth.
